Wide bandwidth microstrip antenna with defected patch surface for low cross polarization applications

Abstract: A simple and single element wide slot dipole loaded shorted rectangular microstrip antenna has been proposed and investigated experimentally for broad impedance bandwidth and improved cross polarized (XP) radiation compared to maximum co‐polarized (CP) gain without changing the co‐polarized (CP) radiation pattern. Around 23‐35 dB isolation between CP and XP radiation along with 25% impedance bandwidth is achieved with the proposed structure. The measured gain of the antenna is around 6.2 dBi over the entire ba… Show more

“…4.0 mm. The reason for the increase of f 1 is similar to the case for parameter G V , that is, it can also be derived from (10) to (12) that the increase of G U leads to a decrease of C V when other parameters in Table 1 are fixed, while C 1 , C P1 , and L 1 are almost kept unchanged, thus C m is decreased. From (26), the resultant upward frequency shifts for f 1 is observed.…”

“…Many researchers have devoted to broaden the bandwidth, and some techniques have been proposed and applied, including substrate with low permittivity (e.g., air substrate) and increasing the substrate thickness; incorporating coplanar parasitic elements 1,2 or stacked structures; 3,4 specific feeding techniques, such as L-shaped probe feed, 5 T-shaped probe feed, 6 and crossshaped probe; 7 cutting slots in the patch, such as U-slot, 8,9 E-shaped slot, 10 V-slot, 11 and other shapes of slots. [12][13][14][15] However, microstrip antennas with low permittivity substrate have the disadvantage of large volume, which limits its application in some space limited cases. Increasing the substrate thickness has the limitation of further increase in bandwidth due to the inductance from the fed probe.…”

“…In addition, the size of the aperture type unit cell used to develop the proposed superstrate is nearly 27% compact than the reference [23] unit cell which significantly reduces the overall structure. The proposed work uses the DPS for the narrowband application but it is also effective for the wideband cross-polarization reduction without affecting the gain of the antenna, as reported in [24]. The width of a rectangular patch antenna is shorted to the ground using a shorting-pin and an optimized thin slot is incorporated near to the shorting-pin, resulting in co-cross-polarization isolation of more than 30 dB in the elevation plane.…”
