Wide frequency range measurements of absolute phase and amplitude of vibrations in micro- and nanostructures by optical interferometry

Abstract: Abstract:A heterodyne interferometer has been built in order to characterize vibrations on micro-and nanostructures. The interferometer offers the possibility of both absolute phase and high resolution absolute amplitude vibrational measurements. By using two acousto-optic modulators (AOMs) in one of the interferometer arms and varying the frequency inputs of both, the setup is designed to measure vibrations in the entire frequency range 0 -1.2GHz. The system is here demonstrated on Capacitor Micromachined Ult… Show more

“…Several authors have published interferometer systems with minimum detectable amplitudes in the picometer-range, see, e.g., [5,6,[8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. Of these, two extremes can be found: The early work of Monchalin et al [5], a quantum noise limited heterodyne interferometer, is to be noted for a particularly small minimum detectable amplitude limit of 0.06 pm, with a laser power P opt D 5 mW and a detection bandwidth of 1 Hz.…”

“…Among them, dual-frequency laser [1,2] and acousto-optic modulator [3,4] are commonly used. The carrier frequencies generalized by the above two methods are from several megahertz to tens of megahertz which is considered too high for the sampling frequency of area-array detector (such as CCD industrial camera).…”

“…The carrier frequencies generalized by the above two methods are from several megahertz to tens of megahertz which is considered too high for the sampling frequency of area-array detector (such as CCD industrial camera). In HSPI imaging system, the point-sensing device with scanning technique is conventionally demanded to collect heterodyne signal [4,5]. However, such a design limits the development of the whole field and dynamic imaging in real time.…”
