Wide‐range adjustable speed control method for dual‐motor drive systems

Abstract: This study proposes a new control method for a dual-motor drive system to share its output torque and extend its operating speed range. When the drive system is operated below the rated speed, the dual motors are operated in parallel to share the total output torque. By using the proposed parallel dual-motor, the efficiency of the whole drive system can be effectively increased. On the other hand, when the drive system is operated beyond the rated speed, one motor is operated at a standstill and its stator ind… Show more

“…Therefore, it is necessary to find other powertrain structures that can improve tractor efficiency. Many studies have shown that dual-input coupling powertrain systems (DICPSs) have been widely used in electric vehicles to reduce energy consumption and improve efficiency [9][10][11][12]. By using two smaller motors instead of a single high-power source, the torque capacity of a single motor can be reduced, which is beneficial to the development of high-speed motors, thereby increasing the power density of the driving system.…”

“…Similarly, mechanical ports can also be mechanically coupled via torque or speed [157], [158] or completely independent [159]. This flexibility in configuration brings the multi-machine systems with additional benefits over conventional SEP+SMP machines, such as better torque-speed characteristics and efficiency [157], [158], [160], lower system cost [161][162][163][164] and enhanced fault-tolerance [165], etc.…”

“…The research object is the model of a surface-mounted PMSM. The FOC (Field Oriented Control) is a very practical and effective control strategy for PMSM drives [19][20][21][22][23]. Theoretically, the FOC for a PMSM drive allows the motor torque to be controlled independently with the flux like DC motor operation.…”
