Wideband and high-order microwave vortex-beam launcher based on spoof surface plasmon polaritons

Abstract: The electromagnetic vortex carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM), which is first studied at optical frequency, has begun to attract widespread attention in the field of radio-frequency/microwave. However, for the OAM mode generated by traditional single antennas, there are problems such as low order and narrow bandwidth, and complex structures such as dual-fed networks may be required. In this paper, based on spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) mode leaky-wave antenna, a single-port traveling-wave ring is… Show more

“…However, this approach requires a complex phase-shifted feed network. Although the annular traveling waves of a leaky-wave antenna based on spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) can radiate high-order OAM waves, the size of this structure is excessively large [5]. The whispering gallery modes (WGMs) of dielectric resonators can be excited to generate helical-phase wavefronts [6,7].…”

“…In the past, SPPs were studied only in the visible or ultraviolet (UV) frequency band but in 2014 Pendry et al proposed a subwavelength structure consisting of square hole arrays to produce the dispersion analogous to the natural SPPs at microwave frequency; such an electromagnetic response is called the spoof SPPs. The concept of spoof SPPs helps to miniaturize the integrated circuits and enhance the field confinement, which helps in many potential applications in lasing, 2 filters, 3 waveguides, 4 devices, 5 and sensing, 6,7 and so on.…”

“…In this case, a complex feeding network is required. For high-order OAM modes, due to the large number of array elements and the large phase difference between adjacent cells, it is a considerable challenge to the design of the phase-shifted network [5][6][7][8] . Leaky-wave antennas based on spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) can even generate OAM waves up to the 12th order with a wide bandwidth [9] .…”
