This article introduces the performance of conventional probe‐fed patch antennas with different substrate layers. Then, the geometry of L‐probe fed patch antennas with multiple dielectric layers is discussed. By embedding layers of finite dielectric materials, the L‐probe fed patch antennas achieve wideband performance. The low‐profile characteristic of patch antenna is also retained, and the size of the antenna can be minimized to have a surface area. It is expected that the L‐probe patch antenna design would be attractive in base station antenna design for MIMO (multiple input and multiple output) systems with its characteristics of low profile and compact size.
