Widening the Gene Pool of Sexual Tetraploid Bahiagrass: Generation and Reproductive Characterization of a Sexual Synthetic Tetraploid Population

Abstract: The improvement of bahiagrass, Paspalum notatum Flüggé, has been inhibited by reduced levels of genetic diversity in sexual tetraploid germplasm. A few experimental sexual tetraploid genotypes (ESTGs) have been generated by chromosome doubling, but these plants typically exhibit low vigor. The objectives of this work were to generate and characterize the ploidy level, mode of reproduction, and fertility of a novel 308 individual sexual synthetic tetraploid population (SSTP) developed by intercrossing 29 sexual… Show more

“…Genetic variability is the key for planning and implementing breeding programmes, allowing a better utilisation of resources and increasing the improvement efficiency (Poehlman, ). Recently our research group has generated a sexual synthetic population of P. notatum , attempting to transfer the genetic variability from the apomictic to the sexual tetraploid germplasm (Zilli et al, ). This population is expected to be the base gene pool for breeding of tetraploid P. notatum .…”

“…The second group was formed by 10 NATG collected along the natural distribution range of the species (Figure ). Finally, the third group consisted of 306 genotypes belonging to a SSTP (Zilli et al, ). This population was created by intercrossing 29 sexual F 1 hybrids, which were generated by crossing the sexual germplasm named ESTG with the apomictic ecotypes identified as NATG.…”

“…Furthermore, considering the ecological amplitude found among species, and the reproductive, morphological, and genetic variability present in the group (Zuloaga and Morrone 2005), Paspalum is of scientific interest for a variety of studies, including topics on evolution, like the origin and distribution of new apomicts (e.g. Hojsgaard 2018) and applied agronomy, like breeding of native forages (Marcón et al 2018;Zilli et al 2018Zilli et al , 2019. Many Paspalum species are characterized by the existence of conspecific cytotypes, i.e.…”

“…Most available methods rely on reproductive tissues or observation of progeny. Embryo sac observation is the most popular method among plant breeders (Weiler et al, 2017; Zilli et al, 2018), since it is inexpensive and reliable. Flow cytometric seed analysis is also effectively used for some species (Novo et al, 2017).…”
