Widowhood

Abstract: This entry summarizes the social meaning of widowhood. It discusses demographic aspects of widowhood and its gendered impact. Widowhood requires building a new identity and negotiation of relationships with children and friends and requires the widowed person to adapt to living alone. Future research will have to consider same‐sex widowhood and loss of lifelong partners who were not married.
