Wildebeest migration in East Africa: Status, threats and conservation measures

Abstract: 53 Migration of ungulates is under pressure worldwide from range contraction, habitat 54 loss and degradation, anthropogenic barriers and poaching. Here, we synthesize and 55 compare the extent of historical migrations of the white-bearded wildebeest 56 (Connochaetes taurinus) to their contemporary status, in five premier East African 57 ecosystems, namely the Serengeti-Mara, Masai Mara, Athi-Kaputiei, Amboseli and 58 Tarangire-Manyara. The current status, threats to migration, migratory ranges and 59 routes f… Show more

“…Conversion of grazing land into crop fields will therefore continue to present the greatest threat to pastoralism in Simanjiro. Wildlife conservation is being adversely affected as more traditional wildlife grazing, calving and dispersal areas are converted into subsistence and commercial croplands (Mwalyosi 1992;Sachedina 2008;Msoffe et al 2019). In Kenya, land tenure is similar in Kitengela and Maasai Mara sites and land is now fully privatized with individuals owning title to their land (Thompson 2002;Nkedianye et al 2009).…”

“…In this study, we use SECR models to determine the effects of resource pulses (Furey et al 2018) on the density and space‐use of a wide‐ranging carnivore population. We conducted the study in the Maasai Mara (Kenya), well known for its annual migration of prey (Msoffe et al 2019). Every year there is a seasonal influx of resources as > 1.4 million migrating wildebeest Connochaetes taurinus and large numbers of zebras Equus quagga and Thomson's gazelle Eudorcas thomsonii move into the Maasai Mara for a four month period (Holdo et al 2009).…”

“…It would be very interesting to see Years were grouped into three decades to ease graphical interpretation whether movement data on migratory herds corroborate our findings. Other known direct anthropogenic effects on the Serengeti NP include range reduction, habitat loss and/or degradation, disturbance, anthropogenic barriers, and poaching (Campbell & Hofer, 1995;Harris et al, 2009;Hofer et al, 1996Hofer et al, , 2000Msoffe et al, 2019).…”

Little is known about climate change‐induced effects on herbivore migrations worldwide, as most studies focus on other taxa (Seebacher & Post, 2015).…”
