Wildlife linkages: volumes and values of residual timber in riparian zones in eastern Texas

Abstract: In regenerating southern pine, maintenance of riparian zones (RZs) is a major land concession for soil and water protection and wildlife habitat enhancement. However, there are few data quantifying the volume and value of residual timber in such areas. We inventoried merchantable timber in nine RZs of three widths in sapling-class East Texas pine plantations. Present, discounted, and projected volumes and values of residual timber were determined. Average per-acre volumes of narrow, medium, and wide RZs were 3… Show more

“…Although it is generally assumed that riparian zones are highly productive for timber, there are few actual quantitative data to back this up (but see Means et al 1996, Burns et al 1999. In our experiment, the trees harvested from riparian zones tended to be larger than those from clearcuts (by about 77%), indicating either that trees in the riparian zones were larger on average or that there was some bias by the operators in selecting larger trees, or a combination of both.…”

“…form of modified harvesting is allowed (Burns et al 1999, Ice et al 2006. Nevertheless, land owners and managers may be reluctant to harvest within riparian forests, unless the economic benefits are clearly substantial (Zobrist and Lippke 2003).…”

“…In forested watersheds, riparian areas are important for the ecological services they provide (Gregory et al, 1991) as well as the timber resources they supply (Burns et al, 1999;Palik et al, 1999). The latter may result from the occurrence of species that are unique to riparian areas (Palik et al, 1999), but in regions rich in surface water, riparian forests are important simply because a large percentage of the timber base is close to water.…”
