ABSTRACThis study was carried out to examine farm operations cooperatives in Central Agricultural Zone of Delta State, Nigeria. All the members of the six (6) selected groups were used for the study. The data which were collected with the use of questionnaire and interview schedule were analyzed with the use of frequency counts, percentages and tobit regression model. Most of the members were females and were also mostly married. Most of them were educated formally and had average household size of 5 persons and average farm size of 2.5 ha. They had an average farming experience of 13 years and most of them had no contact with extension agents. Most (76.50%) household had members that emigrated from households. They subscribed to these groups because of reduction of labour cost, timely execution and conclusion of farm operations, exchange of ideas and information, expansion of farm size and reduction of drudgery involved in farming. They were mostly satisfied with their various groups. They however had challenges ranging from irregular meeting attendance, inadequate access to extension service, bloated membership strength to lateness to work. Inadequate membership strength was also a constraint to few of the groups. The farmers' decision to subscribe to their various groups was informed or influenced by their marital status, level of education, household size, farm size, farming experience, extension visit and contact with other farmers, and emigration of household members. It was recommended that extension agents should establish frequent contacts with the various groups and educate them on the importance of time and regular meeting attendance. The groups with bloated membership strength should be split into two groups while farmers need to be encouraged to subscribe to those groups with inadequate membership strength.

This study considered the level of inclusion of landless farmers in extension services in Delta State, Nigeria. A sample size of 355 landless farmers who were randomly selected formed the respondents used for this study. The results show that they had a mean age of 45 years and were mostly females who were also mostly married with little level of formal education as their highest level of formal education was secondary education. They had a mean household size of 7 persons and average farming experience of 11.5 years with mean farm size of 2 ha and very many of them did not subscribe to farmer’s groups. They were mostly (70.70%) indigenes of the communities where they resided. Their level of social inclusion in agricultural extension benefits was poor (inclusion index = 0.45). They had an average crop output of 9000kg annually. Their level of social inclusion in agricultural extension services influenced their level of outputs. Their level of social inclusion was significantly influenced by their socioeconomic attributes of age, gender, marital status, and level of formal education, household size, farming experiences, group membership and indigene status. It was concluded that the landless farmers were socially excluded from agricultural extension services. It is recommended that extension agents should change their attitudes towards this class of farmers; and extension agents should persuasively convince the farmers to subscribe to membership of their relevant farmers’ groups

In response to climate change, poultry-vegetable integrated practice was introduced for the management of poultry wastes and to reduce pollution. The cost of chemical fertilizers and the health implications of consuming vegetables produced using chemical fertilizers has been a source of concern to health and nutrition stakeholders. In order to mitigate this problem, the use of organic fertilizers was advocated. This study was conducted to determine the response level poultry-vegetable integration farming practice among farmers in Delta State, Nigeria. The data for the study was elicited from 192 randomly selected registered poultry farmers, with the use of questionnaire and structured interview schedule. The data were analyzed with the application of descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages and means derived from 4-point Likert-type scale and 5-point Likert scale. The hypothesis that the socioeconomic attributes of farmers do not contribute to their practice of poultry-vegetable integrated farming was tested with the application of regression model. The farmers had a mean age of 45.1 years and poultry farm size average of 5571 birds with mean household size of 6 persons and means farming experience of 23.5 years. Most of them subscribed to membership of farmers' groups had 2 times contact with extension agents monthly. Their responses to poultry-vegetable integrated farming was encouraging as they had adoption index of 0.51. The problems they had ranged from high cost of inputs, pests and diseases infestation low market price to inadequate information. It is recommended that Delta Agricultural Procurement Agency be revived; extension agents should introduce integrated pest management and organic method of pests and diseases control: Marketing extension was also recommended.
