Wilms’ Tumor in Horseshoe Kidney

Abstract: Wilms’ tumor is the most common malignant kidney tumor found in children. The Horseshoe kidney is the most common renal fusion malformation. However, Wilms’ tumor is rarely identified in horseshoe kidney patients. Multimodal treatments in Wilms’ tumor can play important roles in increasing the survival rate. In this study, we report the case of a 6-year-old boy in whom a Wilms’ tumor was identified in a horseshoe kidney. The tumor was successfully treated with preoperative chemotherapy, followed by surgical re… Show more

“…Although the current cure rate approaches 85% the early stage of the disease lack specific symptoms, which often delays both diagnosis and optimal treatment (4,5). Moreover, about 25% of Wilms tumor patients will face chronic health problems for many years after diagnosis and treatment (6,7). Therefore, it is of great significance to explore the molecular mechanism of Wilms tumor, such as genes and pathways, to improve its diagnosis, prediction, and treatment.…”

“…[ 5 ] The association of Wilms tumor with genitourinary anomalies like horseshoe kidneys is well known in the literature. [ 1 , 6 ] However, the occurrence of Wilms tumor in orthotopic kidneys with cross-fused renal ectopia is reported as outstandingly rare in children.…”

“…The occurrence of Wilms tumor with various congenital anomalies is well known. [ 1 ] Crossed fused renal ectopia is a rare congenital malformation wherein both kidneys are present unilaterally and fused. The incidence of crossed-fused renal ectopia has been reported to be approximately 1:1000 live births.…”

“…Wilms' tumour is the common renal malignancy in children less than five years old and it accounts for approximately 95 percent of all cases diagnosed before the age of four with the peak incidence in the age range of 2 -5 years [1] [2]. Primarily, Wilms' tumour is a sporadic disease and only 1% to 2% of patients with Wilms tumour have a relative with the disease [3] [4].…”
