Winding tachyons on a Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli spacetime

Abstract: Analyzing closed string tachyon condensation will improve our understanding of spacetime in string theory. We study the string spectrum on a Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole spacetime supported by Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz flux, which provides a calculable example where we would expect to find a quasilocalized tachyon. We find that there is a winding tachyon when the black hole horizon is smaller than the string scale, as expected. However, due to effects of the Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz B field, this… Show more

“…We want to notice that this dramatic failure of local reasoning is typical for cigar-shaped backgrounds. For manifolds with topologically stable thermal circles on the other hand (like Euclidean AdS 3 ), local reasoning is qualitatively good (also see [36]). …”

“…In the undeformed theory, the Noether currents also feature topological terms which distinguish them from the chiral currents obtained in the WZW formulation. As discussed in [103,104], these topological terms are physically relevant. Therefore, we identify the left and right-moving energies of the JT -deformed CFT with the zero mode charges of the j ∂u and j ∂ t − currents, which are the natural quantities to consider in the TsT-transformed background.…”

“…(ii ) what the deformed and undeformed U (1) charges are; and (iii ) which Noether charges correspond to the left and right-moving energies in the dual field theory. We note that subtleties in the identification of the energy and angular momentum already arise for strings on the undeformed BTZ background [103,104]. In this paper we address these points as follows:…”

“…However, from the worldsheet point of view it is the elliptic deformation that is the most tractable because the spectrum of SL(2, R) is unduly complicated in the hyperbolic or parabolic basis. This seemingly technical issue is one of the reasons why the description of the string spectrum on AdS 3 , including the subtle issue of the spectrally flowed sectors [47][48][49], is better understood than it is for BTZ black holes (see however [50][51][52]) even though the two spaces are related by discrete identifications. In particular, it is not even clear how the space-time Virasoro algebra arises from the worldsheet description of the BTZ black hole [51] which is why, in this paper, we will exclusively study the elliptic (time-like) deformation of AdS 3 , hoping to one day return to tackle the null and space-like cases.…”
