Windowed SHE-PWM of Interleaved Four-Quadrant Converters for Resonance Suppression in Traction Power Supply Systems

Abstract: AC electric locomotives that use a number of interleaved four-quadrant converters (4QCs) generate high frequency switching harmonics which may stimulate certain resonances in traction power supply systems (TPSSs). A windowed selective harmonic elimination pulse-width modulation (SHE-PWM) method is proposed to suppress such resonances. Owing to the windowed design and the precalculated solutions, the proposed method covers the wide potential resonant frequency range and addresses the resonant frequency variatio… Show more

“…The alternative solution for resonance suppression is from the perspective of the traction drive system. For example, online and offline optimal PWM schemes are proposed to eliminate resonance harmonics [6][7][8][9], but these schemes are sensitive to the traction networks' parameters. Additionally, the Class-120 locomotives in German railways implement a tuned harmonic filter between the pantograph voltage winding of the input transformer (see Figure 1a).…”

“…From (6), the power grid virtual flux-linkage components along and coordinate axes can be obtained. But there exists pure integral link in (6). If the pure integrator is adopted in the observer of power grid virtual flux, its integral initial value and cumulative deviation should be properly considered.…”

“…To simplify the complex coordinate transformation, the instantaneous power of DPC system should always be estimated in stationary coordinate system. According to (6), the virtual flux-linkage is observed, and then, combining the relationship = / , the estimation of power grid voltage vector can be expressed as follows:…”

“…In 2017, the HX D 2 electric locomotive caused a resonance accident at Datong substation in China, leading to the tripping operation of the locomotive. The accident frequency is 1750 Hz . The frequency of harmonic current focuses on 150 Hz, 250 Hz, 350 Hz etc., as well as the high‐order frequency around integral multiple of the switching frequency.…”
