Winogradskyella aurantia sp. nov., isolated from a marine solar saltern

Abstract: A Gram-stain negative, non-flagellated, facultatively anaerobic, slightly halophilic bacterium, WNB302, was isolated from a marine solar saltern in Wendeng, China (122°0'38.85″E, 36°57'56.49″N). Cells of strain WNB302 were 0.2-0.7 µm wide and 2.0-10.0 µm long, catalase- positive and oxidase-negative. Colonies were opaque, orange and approximately 1.0-2.0 mm in diameter after culture for 96 h on marine agar 2216. Growth occurs at 15-37 °C (optimum, 33-35 °C), pH 6.0-8.5 (optimum, pH 7.0-7.5), and with 0.5-7% Na… Show more

“…The genus Winogradskyella is reported to be heterotrophic, Gram-stain-negative and yellow or orange pigmented [5]. Furthermore, the major respiratory quinone for this genus is menaquinone 6 (MK-6) [6]. The present manuscript reports the isolation and characterization of a novel species of the genus Winogradskyella obtained from a brown alga.…”

“…Physiological parameters of the marine solar saltern were measured in situ : salinity, 70‰, total dissolved solids, 19.1 mg l −1 ; and conductivity, 38.1 S m –1 . Our laboratory has described five novel species from this marine solar saltern: Bacillus mesophilus Zhou et al 2016 [7], Winogradskyella aurantia Sun et al 2017 [8], Lentibacillus sediminis Guo et al 2017 [9], Roseovarius salinarum Wang et al 2018 [10] and Rhodosalinus sediminis Guo et al 2017 [11]. Cultivable bacterial strains were isolated using a standard dilution plating technique at 30 °C on marine agar 2216 (MA; BD).…”
