WIP: A Case Study of Integrating Inclusive Engineering Skills into a Middle-years Biomedical Engineering Course via Model-based Reasoning

Abstract: I am a lecturer in the department of biomedical engineering at Georgia institute of technology /Emory University. I have been working on educational research since 2016. My main focus is on problem based learning core courses. But specifically I work on inclusive model based reasoning and interpersonal skills. I have a Phd in bioelectronics and also do research in functional MRI, with the focus on functional network analysis and working memory.

“…By using SDL, students can not only grow in their understanding of themselves as engineers, therefore solidifying engineering identity, but also build empathy and strengthen connections between students [49]. Beyond introspection, SDL has also been used to encourage students to recognize and navigate bias in designs [50].…”

“…In our previous work (Nezafati, Chua and LeDoux, 2020) we mentioned the idea of creating value for the end-users and consideration of their demands are normally the focus of introductory designbased courses (Gunnarsson, Birch and Hendricks, 2019), or culminating senior capstone experiences or senior projects (Cezeaux et al, 2008;Nasir, Kleinke and McClelland, 2016). Given the fact that, traditionally the main focus of middle-years courses are on technical content and analytical procedure (Lord and Chen, 2014), the demand for attention to "middle-years" courses will be more vivid.…”

“…As a teaching method, it can be applied to all areas of study and has been developed by hundreds of faculty members at colleges and universities across the country [3], [4]. EML can also be infused to specific fields of engineering at any level from freshmen to capstone courses [5], [6]. EML relies on real-world experiences; opportunities to practice information literacy-accessing, analyzing, and synthesizing information; expert-tonovice mentoring in the learning process [7]; and value sensitive design which results in universal value creation [8].…”
