Wireless charging-mediated angiogenesis and nerve repair by adaptable microporous hydrogels from conductive building blocks

Abstract: Traumatic brain injury causes inflammation and glial scarring that impede brain tissue repair, so stimulating angiogenesis and recovery of brain function remain challenging. Here we present an adaptable conductive microporous hydrogel consisting of gold nanoyarn balls-coated injectable building blocks possessing interconnected pores to improve angiogenesis and recovery of brain function in traumatic brain injury. We show that following minimally invasive implantation, the adaptable hydrogel is able to fill def… Show more

“…This hydrogel used its unique surface roughness and remote electrical stimulation via the GYBs to enhance healing processes, specifically increasing BDNF production and calcium ion permeability. This strategy not only promoted cell migration and penetration, but also significantly enhanced functional recovery in brain tissue by exploiting the synergistic effects of electrical stimulation and the microporous structure of the scaffold (Hsu et al, 2022) (Figure 8h-k).…”

“…7 E). The bioactive self-healing hydrogel was also found to possess the ability to promote neural tissue regeneration and, more importantly, to improve motor function recovery [ 63 , 161 ]. Future self-healing hydrogels for treating TBI that are expected to be translated into clinical trials should be designed to meet the mechanical properties of brain tissues while also having multiple functional purposes, specified conductivity, anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidant properties, tissue adhesion, and hemostatic properties.…”
