Abstract-Mobile self-organizing ad hoc networks (MANETs) can significantly enhance the capability to coordinate the emergency actions as well as monitor contaminated areas, explore unmanned space, inspect and control working environments. The management of networks that can dynamically and freely organize into temporary topologies raises interesting problems, that are particularly challenging for networks formed by mobile devices. Due to the inherent complexity of these systems, the development of applications relying on mobile network nodes and wireless communication protocols would be greatly simplified by the use of specific tools for supporting testing and performance evaluation. Modeling and simulation are widely used in the design and development of wireless ad hoc networks. In this paper we model mobile ad hoc network (MANET) using discrete event systems methodology (DEVS) and describe the functionality and performance of the Java-based simulation tool for the performance evaluation of self-organizing and cooperative networks for emergency situation awareness. The simulator can provide a useful support for the verification of the design of a network system, employed communication protocols, control and coordination algorithms, allowing the user to display a step-bystep evolution of the network in a suitable graphical interface. The practical case studies are provided to illustrate the operation and performance of the presented software.

Evaluation and selection method of network simulation tools Artículo corto 55 ResumenExisten diversas herramientas de software para simulación de redes (comerciales y libres). El hecho genera una pregunta interesante para los investigadores: ¿Cuál es mejor utilizar? Este artículo propone un nuevo método de evaluación/ selección basado en dos elementos claves: la norma ISO/IEC 9126-1, que define un modelo de calidad y evaluación de herramientas de software; y una función de costo, compuesta por los valores asignados a las seis características definidas en dicha norma, que permite obtener una valoración para cada una de las herramientas de software a evaluar, basándose en la encuesta a expertos. Se realizó un ejercicio de prueba del método propuesto, para evaluar las herramientas de simulación NS-2 y NCTUns, y sus resultados se contrastaron con la información consultada en publicaciones (artículos e informes técnicos) sobre evaluación/selección de herramientas de simulación de redes. AbstractCurrently exists many software tools designed for Network Simulation (both commercial and Open source), situation that present an important decision to make for many researchers: Which tool use for network simulation? This paper proposes a method for evaluation/selection of network simulation tools, based in two key factors: ISO/IEC 9126-1 standard, which defines a quality model for software evaluation; and a cost function, based on values assigned to each one of the six items defined by ISO/IEC 9126-1. This method allows an expert based classification for each of the analyzed tools. We executed a test for NS-2 and NCTUns network simulation tools and obtained results was contrasted with technical reports and scientific articles related with network simulation tools.

This paper proposes a new framework for future policy-based adaptive vertical handover (VHO) in heterogeneous wireless networks. In contrast to existing, statically configured, schemes that lack the ability to quickly adapt to changing network loads, the proposed framework continuously derives optimal configuration policies with respect to handover initiation and network selection. To achieve this goal, the proposed work relies on the interactions between two components: a policy-based real-time simulator and a VHO manager. Triggered by indications of VHO performance degradation, the former enacts a set of VHO scenarios, selected based on a predefined set of simulation policies, to evaluate possible new VHO configurations before actually applying them to the real network. Based on the outcome of the simulation and the monitored network performance, a set of VHO configuration policies is communicated to the VHO manager to reconfigure and/or fine-tune the running VHO scheme. Preliminary performance evaluation results demonstrate the significant enhancement of the outcome of the proposed VHO framework in terms of reducing the ping-pong phenomenon and the handover delay.Index Terms-4G wireless networks; vertical handover; policybased management; run-time simulation.
