Wireless sensor network comprises of thousands of sensor nodes that are deployed in an area to monitor the physical environment. These sensor nodes have limited energy as they are battery powered. To reduce this problem, several routing protocols are designed in order to minimize energy consumption and increase the lifetime of the sensor network. In this paper, we introduced a new heterogeneous routing protocol known as advanced zonal stable election protocol (AZ-SEP) in which communication of sensor nodes with the base station is hybrid, i.e., some nodes communicate directly, while others use clustering mechanism to transmit data to base station. The dimensions of the field are unknown and are divided into three zones on the basis of nodes energy. We examined Z-SEP protocol regarding cluster head selection and communication of cluster head with the base station and introduced a new mechanism of cluster head selection on the basis of residual energy and distance from the base station. The communication between nodes with the base station occurs in a multi-hop fashion. Furthermore, the AZ-SEP is evaluated by taking different evaluation scenarios such as the changing position of the base station, skewed nodes, and variable node energy to compare it with the parent protocol. We implemented the AZ-SEP and compare it with the traditional routing protocol like Z-SEP and SEP protocol. The proposed protocol and its parent protocol are compared through simulation using simulator MATLAB 2014a. The simulation results show that our proposed protocol increases the stability period by increasing the number of alive nodes, packet delivery ratio, and optimizes average energy consumption as related to the existing protocols.

Wireless sensor network (WSN) merupakan sebuah jaringan nirkabel yang terdiri dari sejumlah sensor node berukuran kecil untuk memantau kondisi lingkungan tertentu. Setiap sensor node akan saling berkomunikasi dan mengirimkan informasi ke base station. Seperti halnya router, sensor node pada WSN juga memiliki kemampuan routing. Protokol routing pada WSN salah satunya dalah AODV yang memiliki karakteristik mencari jalur routing ketika adanya permintaan dari souce node untuk mengirim pesan ke destination node. Dikarenakan sensor node yang dipasang di lingkungan dapat diakses secara fisik maka meningkatkan potensi terjadinya serangan. Serangan wormhole merupakan jenis serangan dimana penyerang memindahkan jalur routing pada WSN ke terowongan yang dibuat diantara source dan destination node. Serangan wormhole dapat menjadi pemicu timbulnya serangan lain pada WSN. Berdasarkan kondisi yang rentan terhadap adanya serangan, maka dibutuhkan adanya mitigasi serangan pada wireless sensor network menggunakan protokol routing AODV dengan sistem shutdown. Hal ini bertujuan untuk mematikan sensor node yang telah mengalami modifikasi dari penyerang sebelum informasi tersebut diproses oleh sistem dan dikirim ke user. Dari hasil pengujian yang dilakukan diketahui bahwa pada penerapan sistem shutdown terjadi efisiensi energi yang dikonsumsi dengan tidak adanya penurunan dalam performansi jaringan. Sehingga sistem shutdown dapat menjadi salah satu solusi efektif dalam memitigasi serangan wormhole.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a visualization platform to control and monitor wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in manufacturing applications. Design/methodology/approach – To make the platform flexible and versatile, a modular framework is adopted in modeling and visualizing WSNs. The Eclipse programming environment is used to maximize the scalability and adaptability of the platform. A set of the core functional modules have been designed and implemented to support the system operation. The platform is validated through a case study simulation. Findings – The platform is capable of accommodating different operating systems such as Windows and Linux. It allows integrating new plug-ins developed in various languages such as Java, C, C++, and Matlab. The Graphic User Interface has been applied to process and visualize the acquired real-time data from a WSN, and the embodied methodologies can be used to predict the behaviors of objects in the network. Research limitations/implications – The work has shown the feasibility and potential of the proposed platform in improving the real-time performance of WSN. However, the number of the developed functional modules is limited, and additional effort is required to develop sophisticated functional modules or sub-systems for a customized application. Practical implications – The platform can be applied to monitor and visualize various WSN applications in manufacturing environments such as automated workcells, transportation systems, logistic, and storage systems. Originality/value – The work is motivated by the scarce research on the development tools for monitoring and visualization of WSNs in manufacturing applications. The proposed platform serves for both of system developers and users. It is modularized with a set of core functional modules; it can be extended to accommodate new functional modules with a minimal effort for a different application.
