Withania somnifera L.: Phenolic Compounds Composition and Biological Activity of Commercial Samples and Its Aqueous and Hydromethanolic Extracts

Abstract: In the present study, the chemical composition and bioactive properties of commercially available Withania somnifera samples were evaluated. The hydromethanolic and aqueous extracts of the tested samples were analyzed in terms of phenolic compound composition, ascorbic acid content, antioxidant and antibacterial activity, and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) inhibitory activities. Polyphenols and ascorbic acid content, as well as the antioxidant activity, were higher in the aqueous … Show more

“…angulata is applied as a traditional folk medicine to cure sore throats, coughs, rheumatism, and hepatitis in many countries, including China, Mexico, Indonesia, and Brazil . The fruits, a sweet or tasteless berry-type climacteric fruit, are known as wild tomato, winter cherry, and gooseberry. A previous study on its whole plant generated a variety of withanolide derivatives, which exhibited cytotoxic and good anti-inflammatory activities. ,, UPLC-Q-Orbitrap-MS/MS was used for the first time to study bioactive withanolides from the fruits of P. angulata, As a result, many withanolide derivatives were produced with good cytotoxic and antiflammatory activities.…”

“…The positive and linear correlation of phenolic compounds as redox properties responsible for antioxidant activity has been documented in the literature. [52][53][54][55] Overall, these findings highlight the complex and diverse interactions between bioactive compounds and their impact on antioxidant and enzyme-inhibitory activities in different tissues.…”

“…For example, the leaves contain five unidentified alkaloids, 12 withanolides, many free amino acids, chlorogenic acid, glycosides, glucose, condensed tannins and flavonoids. In addition, the roots are rich in alkaloids, amino acids, steroids, volatile oil, starch, reducing sugars, glycosides, hentriacontane, dulcitol and withaniol [23]. It seems that this wealth of active substances is not yet fully understood and still requires further research.…”

“…Classification of the active substances in W. somnifera (data from Gaurav H., 2023 [22]). Withanolides and phenolic compounds are mainly responsible for the special medicinal properties of W. somnifera and show immune system-activating and antioxidant effects, respectively [23]. Structurally, withanolides belong to the 28-carbon atoms of natural steroidal lactones, built on an ergostane skeleton in which C-22 and C-26 are oxidized to form six-or five-membered lactone rings.…”
