Women Career Paths in Accounting Organizations: Big4 Scenario

Abstract: In this paper, we analyze the gender issues that are present in the accounting profession, and more precisely, on the career paths one could follow in the accounting profession and what the underlying reasons are for each option. Our conclusions show that some of the factors that influence women career paths are discrimination, motherhood, glass-ceiling, double standard and a lack of visibility.

“…The inequalities manifested within organizations are related to opportunities for professional development and incentives for meaningful work (Hooks, 1992; Charron and Lowe, 2005), networking (Loft, 1992; Anderson-Gough et al , 2001; Lupu, 2012); mentoring (Anderson-Gough et al , 2005; Tiron-Tudor and Faragalla, 2018); unsupportive management or supervisors (Siboni et al , 2016); and visibility (Groenewald et al , 2019).…”

“…However, the accounting profession is strongly masculinized, with more men than women in positions of power (Anderson et al , 1994; Barker et al , 1999). Men in power tend to choose other men to nurture (Tiron-Tudor and Faragalla, 2018), so male partners typically do not choose women to mentor them. This issue leads to a vicious circle in which the low numbers of women in leadership positions lead to a low number of women being mentored and helped to rise to leadership positions themselves.…”

“…From the social constructionist point of view, gendered labour market outcomes have been shaped by a gender system, in which men, the dominant group, overpower women, the subordinate group (Connell, 1987). Gendered behaviours and gender inequalities in the workplace have been created and maintained by this gender system owing to men's efforts in holding on to power (Tiron-Tudor & Faragalla, 2018). Linked to gendered labour market outcomes from the social constructionist perspective are the gendered division of labour, androgyny, and mentoring.…”

Nacionalmente, Casa Nova (2014), Lemos Júnior, Silveira e Santini (2015), Silva (2016), Silva, Magro e Silva (2016), Vaccari e Beuren (2017), Zabotti (2017), Silva e Silva (2018), entre outros autores discutem o assunto.…”
