Industrial-organizational (I-O) psychology has begun to shed its reputation as a handmaiden to corporate and managerial interests, in part, through its engagement with humanitarian concerns. However, as highlighted by recent commentary, I-O psychology still has a decidedly POSH perspective on the world; that is, it has focused on Professionals who hold Official jobs in a formal economy and who enjoy relative Safety from discrimination while also living in High-income countries. This POSH perspective reflects an underlying bias away from people living in multidimensional poverty. We empirically illustrate some of the connections between a POSH perspective and poverty by reviewing 100 years of research in I-O psychology, and then we make a case for why a neglect of people living in poverty undermines the discipline's science, its practice, and its humanist charge. As moral justification for greater engagement with humanitarian concerns and as a guide to navigate the difficult ethical quandaries involved in doing so, we suggest that I-O psychologists should consider the capability approach. We discuss the concept of human capabilities, relate it to I-O psychology, and demonstrate its utility in the form of three hypothetical scenarios. Perhaps our most controversial claim is that there is a moral imperative for I-O psychology to overrepresent people living in the deepest forms of poverty in both its science and practice.

This article discusses a study on empowerment of a group at risk via social media in Malaysia which focuses on five important dimensions namely economy, social and cultural, legal, political, and psychology. The group at risk focused in the study refers to women. The study employed a survey that uses a set of online questionnaire distributed to women who are actively using social media, particularly social networking sites. This study involves a sample of 1,307 respondents in an exploratory study, in which a 5-factor 24-item instrument to measure empowerment comprising of the five hypothesised dimensions were being developed. Results confirm factor structures of the empowerment model and suggest a more parsimonious instrument for each; a 5-factor 15-item scale for social media empowerment, as compared to the result of pilot study conducted. Goodness-of-fit indices for the model are presented. The result shows that the five dimensions are significant to the empowerment model of women in Malaysia. The findings can contribute greatly to a better understanding of the empowerment mechanism behind social media issues pertaining to women.

In credit markets where imperfection is the rule rather than the exception, collateral has evolved as an established practice by institutional lenders to address the issues of adverse selection and moral hazard associated with credit contracts. In spite of a continuous government thrust to provide fi nancial services to the excluded, institutional lenders are often not keen to lend to the marginalized population, who usually lack marketable collateral and creditworthy projects ( Fisher and Sriram, 2002 : 40). While borrowers are confronting transaction costs ( Mahajan and Ramola, 2003 ), commercial banks are asking for more collateral, blaming rising default rates ( Basu, 2006 ), which seem to be limiting credit provision. In this context, microcredit has obviated the need for marketable collateral by instituting joint liability and peer pressure as a collateral substitute ( Besley and Coate, 1995 ). It arranges for door-step delivery of small amounts of credit not only for productive investment, but also for consumption smoothing and contingency ( Morduch, 1999 ). Th us, microcredit aims to cover the economically underprivileged who face diffi culty in accessing institutional credit for emancipation from the vicious poverty cycle, social inclusion, and empowerment ( Milana and Ashta, 2012 ). But historically, women have formed the major clientele of microcredit: according to a recent estimate (see Reed, 2011 ), around 75% of microcredit clients are women. Th e rationale behind this gender-specifi c microcredit delivery mechanism has been captured in the existing literature (for a detailed review see Cheston and Kuhn, 2002 ) as follows:First, women are most vulnerable and among the poorest of the poor. Second, women have minimum access to fundamental human rights.The male inclusivity of the change process has established the program on a strong footing.A bottom-up approach helped the program to cater for the needs of the local community.The success of the program was also crafted through the selfselection of business activity by loaned members.1 JEL classifi cation: G21; J16; P36.A positive social and fi nancial change is detected in the lives of women members of the government-sponsored G olden J ubilee U rban E mployment S cheme.
