ObjectivesThe aim of the present study was to investigate gender composition of the editorial board members of the journals in the field of periodontology and implantology.Materials and MethodsA rigorous search was performed through Web of Science database to identify journals, scoping on the periodontology and implantology research fields. Data on journal's demographic information, gender of the editorial board members were gathered from the journals fulfilling the predefined inclusion/exclusion criteria. Variables including journal impact factor and quartiles were extracted as well.ResultsThe proportion of women in the editorial team in periodontology journals was 27.3%, whereas it was almost 19% in implantology journals. As for editorial leadership, these ratios were 22.1% and 19.8%, respectively. There were significantly less women than men in editor‐in‐chief position in periodontology journals (p = 0.042). Journal metrics had no impact on the gender distribution of editor‐in‐chief positions in both fields.ConclusionsWomen seem to be under‐represented as editorial leaders or board members in journals of periodontology and implantology. The proportion of women in periodontology journals has increased in the last decade; however, there is still a clear need for further increase to have a gender balance.

El rol de la mujer en la ciencia, especialmente en STEM (Ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas; por sus siglas en inglés) ha avanzado dramáticamente a través de los años, a pesar de todos los obstáculos característicos de cada siglo 1. La estructura social había considerado a la mujer como cuidadora de la casa y de los niños, además de ser consideradas inferiores en términos de intelecto y empleo 2. Áreas como medicina y la naciente odontología, que en el siglo diecinueve estaban dominadas por hombres, albergan ahora en las aulas universitarias grupos igualitarios de estudiantes de ambos géneros. Aun cuando el progreso es evidente en cuanto al acceso a la formación profesional en ciencias de la salud, el camino hacia la obtención de puestos de responsabilidad mayor, o toma de decisiones, sigue siendo desigual para las mujeres en estas áreas.

BackgroundDespite recent advancements, women still encounter significant challenges in various fields, including dentistry. However, the increasing interest in female participation in science acknowledges its fundamental role in the advancement of knowledge. This study aims to assess indicators of women's involvement in Brazilian research in the areas of Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine.MethodsThis cross‐sectional study evaluated 197 professionals affiliated with the Brazilian Society of Stomatology and Oral Pathology in 2023. Data were collected from publicly available Lattes curriculum and organized into three sets of information: researcher profile, scientific production and human resources formation. Both the data from the researcher's entire career and from the last 5 years (2019–2023) were assessed separately. Descriptive analyses of categorical variables were performed, while the Mann–Whitney test was employed to compare the numerical variables regarding researchers' gender.ResultsOf 197 professionals, 117 (59.4%) were female. Although there was no significant difference in scientific production between genders, men had more publications, received approximately twice as many citations, and exhibited higher H‐index values compared to women. Notably, women surpassed men in undergraduate student supervision, while men predominated in supervising master's and PhD students.ConclusionsThis study highlighted the relevance of female participation in Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine research in Brazil. However, disparities persist regarding women participation, especially in scientific article citations and postgraduate students' supervision.
