This study was carried out to determine the knowledge level of mothers regarding breast milk banking and wet nursery. Materials and Methods: Target population of the study planned as a definitive and cross-sectional type was created for all mothers who gave birth in a state hospital in Bursa province between December 2017 and March 2018; the study was completed with 406 mothers who recently gave birth. The data were collected with a total of 32 questions prepared by the researchers in accordance with the literature. IBM SPSS Statistics 22 (IBM SPSS, Turkey) program was used to evaluate the data. Results: It was detected that the average age of mothers who participated in the study was 28.10±5.26; 31.8% (n=129) were primary school graduates; and 88.2% (n=258) were not working. It was detected that 54.9% (n=223) of mothers gave birth with normal delivery and most of them (92.4% n=375) breastfed their baby. It was seen that more than half of the mothers (56.4% n=229) did not want to be a wet nurse for someone they do not know; and 81% (n=329) of mothers would not accept wet nursing from someone they do not know if their baby needed breast milk. It was detected that 3/4 of mothers (73.20% n=297) did not know about Breast Milk Banking (ASB). When the reason they did not want to benefit from ASB was inspected, 44.9% (n=115) of mothers stated that they did not trust breast milk banking. The rate of mothers who wanted to be a wet nurse for a baby whose mothers they do not know in nuclear families (35.3%) was found significantly higher compared to mothers in extended families (p: 0.016; p<0.05). Conclusion:It was determined that mothers who participated in the study had insufficient knowledge about breast milk banking and had various concerns about breast milk and ASB. Educating mothers, raising the awareness of the society, raising awareness of the importance of breast milk and comprehensively addressing their concerns (security, religious concerns, etc.) in creating solutions is crucial.

Attitudes and Views Concerning Human Milk Banking Among Mothers Residing in a Rural Region of Bangladesh

Background Human milk banks play an essential role by providing human milk to infants who would otherwise not be able to receive mother’s milk. Study aim To determine the opinions and attitudes among possible donor mothers regarding human milk banks in one rural region in Bangladesh. Methods A prospective, cross-sectional study following a probability type of stratified cluster sampling technique was used. Included in the study ( N = 121) were mothers aged 20–49 years, with at least one child, who was currently lactating or had breastfed her child, and who resided in the rural community of Bangladesh where the study was conducted. Data were collected through a 21-item, close-ended questionnaire and a face-to-face interview conducted by the researcher at each participant’s home. Results Among the participants, 98.3% ( n = 119) said that they had not heard about human milk banks before speaking with the researchers. Most participants (71.9%, n = 87) said would obtain human milk from milk banks if necessary, but 28% ( n =34) of mothers indicated that they would not receive milk from a milk bank, even if it was necessary for their children. Only 8.3% ( n = 10) said human milk banks were not appropriate according to Islam and 99.2% ( n = 120) did not know about the acceptance of human milk banking practices in Bangladesh. Conclusions For those with religious concerns, a framework for both the donors and recipients can be established. It can be recommended that health education through healthcare personnel (midwives, nurses, gynecologists, pediatricians, and other health professionals) and religious leaders may strengthen the belief and increase awareness among family members about milk banking practices.

The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between the opinions of mothers with newborns in intensive care unit on human milk banking and their religious attitudes. Designed in a descriptive and cross-sectional type (June-November 2015). The study was conducted on 200 mothers who agreed to participate in the study. The data were collected using the Religious Attitude Scale and an information form. It was determined that the mothers' 4% gave another mother's milk to their babies, and that 95% did not give their own milk to other babies. It was found that 32% of the mothers stated they would not be willing to donate milk if a milk bank opened, while 69% of this proportion did not favor the donation due to religious milk kinship. No statistically significant relation was found between parents' education, employment status, family type, number of children and scale scores (p>.05). It was concluded that the religious orientations of the mothers influenced their attitudes towards human milk banks, and that did not have a positive perspective on human milk banking. When the test results were examined, it was found that the only variable that was a significant predictor on the religious attitude was "obtaining milk from the bank when needed".
