Highly effective novel adsorbent [CoFe 2 O 4-humic acid(HA)] was synthesized by co-precipitation technique at pH 6 (H6) and pH 8 (H8). XRD, S BET and Zeta-potential measurements were used to study the physicochemical properties of the prepared nanoparticles. XRD results showed that the chemical treatment of CoFe 2 O 4 by HA causes the appearance of carbon as new active sites for adsorption process. Batch adsorption tests were achieved to eliminate anionic remazole-red (RR-133) and cationic methylene blue (MB) dyes. The obtained data showed that H6 and H8 solids calcined at 300 and 500 °C have higher adsorption rate for removing of dye than unmodified cobalt iron mixed oxide. The removal reached 100% after a period of dye contact time 2 min and 30 min for RR and MB, respectively. The uptake of RR and MB was much affected by the pH of dye solution. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model was the most fitted well and the adsorption process followed the Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption of dye on adsorbent was chemisorption process. The as-prepared adsorbents can be regenerated and reused four times for both dyes. The efficiency of the prepared nano-samples and durability as adsorbent were accomplished.

Activated biomass of the green microalga Chlamydomonas variabilis as an efficient biosorbent to remove methylene blue dye from aqueous solutions

The raw and activated biomass of a green microalga, Chlamydomonas variabilis, were investigated as adsorbents for the removal of methylene blue (MB) dye from aqueous solutions. Chlamydomonas variabilis was isolated and cultivated to obtain a sufficient algal biomass. The collected biomass was first oven-dried and then activated by H2SO4. The results obtained showed that the optimum adsorption of MB occurred over 30 min of contact time at pH 7 and an biosorbent dose of 1.5 and 1.0 g·L−1 of dried biomass and activated biosorbent, respectively. Point of zero charge (pHpzc) was recorded at pH 6.8 and 6.9 for dried and activated biomass, respectively. The activated biomass was a more effective biosorbent than was the dried biomass: At a MB concentration of 82.4 mg·L−1, the minimum removal was greater than 98% using 1 g·L−1 activated biomass with a maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of 115 mg·g−1, whereas at a MB concentration of 56.4 mg·L−1, the maximum removal did not exceed 80.8% using 1.5 g·L−1 raw biomass with a qmax of 18.3 mg·g−1. Furthermore, the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models of adsorption showed a better model fit when using activated biomass than when using raw biomass, with the former yielding R2 values greater than 0.9. The kinetic data suggest that the adsorption of MB follows the pseudo-second-order equation better than the pseudo-first-order one. This study demonstrates that the activated biomass of Chlamydomonas variabilis can be used as an effective biosorbent for the treatment of dye-containing wastewater streams.

O descarte de efluentes têxteis não tratados nos meios aquosos pode ocasionar em um rápido esgotamento do oxigênio dissolvido, o que resulta em um desequilíbrio noecossistema. São vários os métodos utilizados na remoção de cor, e, dentre eles, a adsorção vem se mostrando como um método de tratamento simples, barato e eficiente. O objetivo deste trabalho consiste em avaliar a habilidade da biomassa mista de Aspergillus niger e capim elefante (Penissetum purpureum Schum) na remoção do corante Remazol Vermelho de uma solução aquosa sintética sob difrentes condições de temperatura (30, 40 e 50 °C), concentrações variando entre 25 e 105 mg/L, tempo de adsorção de 0 a 200 minutos e pH 2.0. O estudo cinético foi caracterizado pelo modelo de pseudo-segunda ordem. Já o modelo de Langmuir se mostrou o melhor ajuste linear das isotermas de adsorção, apresentando uma capacidade de adsorção de 3,42 mg g-1. A esponteneidade da reação de adsorção foi avaliada através daenergia lvire de Gibbs. O estudo termodinâmico indicou que a adsorção é favorável e espontânea, além de que o aumento da temperatura ocasiona em uma redução na capacidade de adsorção. Estes resultados obtidos em efluentes sintéticosdemonstram que o adsorvente misto produzido neste estudo é uma alternativa promissora no tratamento de efluentes contaminados com Remazol Vermelho.
