The stem and bulb nematode (Ditylenchus dipsaci) is a serious quarantine pest of vegetables spreading worldwide via seed and planting material. Currently, a hot water technique is used as the pre-seed treatment, which is difficult to execute and the risk of seed damage is high. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the (a) penetration of gaseous hydrogen cyanide (HCN) into garlic tissue; (b) HCN phytotoxicity, and (c) nematicide potential of HCN against D. dipsaci. Penetration of HCN into the core of the garlic clove was approximately 30% of the concentration inside the fumigation chamber after 30 h of exposure. Decreased emergency was observed only in the exposure treatment lasting 16 and more hours. Garlic cloves naturally infested by D. dipsaci were treated with HCN at a concentration of 20 g/m 3 for 12, 18 and 24 h in a fumigation chamber, and 99% mortality was achieved in all three exposure times.

Food Sci., 33: 174-179.In the milling industry, the Tribolium confusum is hard to exterminate pest. We measured the concentration time product (Ct-P) achieved during the hydrogen cyanide (HCN) fumigation and examined whether the Ct-P levels in the explored Czech pilot mill were sufficient to control the field strain of T. confusum. Using an originally constructed, gastight fumigation chamber, it was estimated that the Ct-P required for the complete killing of the field strain of T. confusum was 4× higher (4.35 g/h/m 3 ) than the levels required to kill the laboratory strain (1.25 g/h/m 3 ). The Ct-P levels (ranging from 79 g/h/m 3 to 100 g/h/m 3 ) reached during the mill fumigations with HCN were less than half of the labelled HCN rate (240 g/h/m 3 ). Nevertheless, the current HCN dosage is still sufficient since the Ct-P reached during the mill fumigations was at least 99× higher than that required for the exterminating to the lab strain and 18× higher than that required for the field strain extermination. These results were confirmed in mill validation testing, where 100% mortality of T. confusum adults was achieved.

BACKGROUND Ethanedinitrile (EDN) is a fumigant being commercialized worldwide as an alternative phytosanitary treatment to methyl bromide (MB) for forest products. The penetration characteristics of MB and EDN were measured through the bark of wooden blocks (100 × 100 × 50 mm) cut from the upper (average bark thickness 5 ± 2 mm) and lower (average bark thickness 25 ± 5 mm) trunk of recently felled pine (Pinus radiata D.Don) trees. Doses of 48 g m−3 MB and 50 g m−3 EDN were applied to chambers at 10 and 20°C for 10 h. RESULTS Penetration of MB was influenced by the interaction between fumigation time and temperature, with concentrations increasing at a higher rate at 20°C compared with at 10°C. After 10 h, an average concentration of 8.05 ± 0.89 g m−3 had penetrated the bark of log sections at 20°C, whereas 5.20 ± 0.89 g m−3 was measured at 10°C. By contrast, the factors examined in this study did not significantly impact the penetration of EDN. Concentration × time (CT) values for MB under the bark were 35.20 ± 2.30 g h m−3 at 10°C and 55.85 ± 9.58 g h m−3 at 20°C; whereas for EDN, CT values were 19.50 ± 6.80 g h m−3 at 10°C and 19.08 ± 4.10 g h m−3 at 20°C. CONCLUSION MB can achieve a higher concentration under the bark of log sections during simulated fumigations, but all of the factors examined affected the ability of MB to penetrate the bark of wooden blocks. By comparison, the penetration of EDN through the bark is more consistent than MB under laboratory conditions. © 2022 The Authors.
