Wood Residues in the Moratuwa Woodworking Industry Cluster of Sri Lanka: Potential for Sector Synergies and Value-Added Products

Abstract: The Moratuwa Woodworking Industry Cluster (MWIC) is a geographically concentrated cluster of over 1,600 small-to-medium scale wood-based manufacturing and retail facilities in Sri Lanka. Firms include furniture manufacturers, carpentry shops, sawmills, and integrated sawmills. The concept of industrial symbiosis explores the synergies between industrial facilities to exchange energy, water, by-products, and waste to achieve a higher efficiency in resource utilization. This research was undertaken to address th… Show more

“…On the other hand, Himandi et al (2021) have highlighted that inefficiency and waste in timber production can be addressed through training interventions in the areas of harvesting and industry. In this sense, the effect of training the field personnel in the ejido Basihuare allows for a mean reduction in volume that will be transformed into solid waste by 0.90%, with a maximum value of 2.13% relative to the total volume of the log.…”

“…Recent studies suggest that annual timber consumption in Sri Lanka is over 1.6 million m3 from which, over 10% are imports [15]. Unlike in the past, the timber supply from natural forests has become highly restricted with the aim of preserving the remaining natural forests [16,17]. As such, forest plantations have become an essential source of timber.…”

“…Rubberwood is an essential raw material, particularly for export-oriented wood products manufacturers [16,20]. Sri Lanka's wood-based manufacturing sector is characterized by sawmill, furniture, construction, parquet flooring, wood-based panel products, and carving enterprises, with the majority of companies focusing on domestic markets [17,21,22]. These companies predominantly depend on the local wood supply for raw materials [15,21].…”

“…Recent studies have shed light on its impressive ability to deliver energy in various forms that cater to people's needs, encompassing liquid and gaseous fuels, heat, and electricity. Therefore, bioenergy plays a significant role in reducing poverty in developing countries while simultaneously tackling the restoration of unproductive and degraded lands [29,30]. This restoration process yields multiple benefits, such as increased biodiversity, enhanced soil fertility, and improved water retention [31][32][33].…”
