Woodlot management and livelihoods in a tropical conservation landscape

Abstract: In biodiversity hotspots, there is often tension between human needs and conservation, exacerbated when protected areas prevent access to natural resources. Forest-dependent people may compensate for exclusion by managing unprotected forests or cultivating planted woodlots. Outside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, household wood product needs are high and population growth puts pressure on the environment. We investigated the role of privately and collectively managed woodlots in provisioning wood … Show more

“…Many tourism facilities have been built and the number of tourists has increased significantly. The study results show that the hotspot areas of water conservation-recreation services show a decreasing trend, indicating that there was a trade-off between the two which is consistent with Chen et al (2021) as they pointed out that the trade-off between the two also appears in Beijing Bay. This reflects that the explosive development of tourism has brought certain pressure to the regional ecological environment, which ultimately affects regional ecosystem services to a certain extent.…”

“…The total standing volume of woodlots is largely contributed by Populus (35.95%) followed by Salix (33.78%), Robinia (19.29%) and Mixed (10.90%) (Fig.2). The differences in standing volume per ha among the Populus, Salix, Robinia and Mixed woodlots could be linked to the stand age, density, growth characteristics, farming experience, management practices, access to woodlot, levels of farmers' motivations etc (Zoysa and Inoue, 2016;Bailey et al, 2021)…”
