Wool textile identification by terahertz spectroscopy

Abstract: A variety of woollen textiles were examined using THz time-domain spectroscopy. Textiles containing wool of different animal origins were shown to have different THz optical properties, which may be employed to identify the type of wool and to combat textile counterfeiting.

“…Besides, when measuring the transmission of THz wave in carbon fiber and glass fiber, the arrangement direction of fiber in the sample affects the THz spectral characteristics of the fabric, which suggests that the texture structure impacts the spectral absorption characteristics and forms some structure-induced peaks. 29,31 Accordingly, it is speculated that the absorption curves of cloth samples might be a certain factor affected by the higher-order structure of textile weaving. In order to confirm this conjecture, the fiber powder tablets without grid structure were prepared and tested.…”

“…Rotational and vibrational transitions of a large number of organic molecules have strong absorption and dispersion characteristics in the terahertz range [3].But until the end of the last century, with the development of the ultrashort pulsed laser technology, terahertz science and technology began to develop rapidly. In recent years, terahertz waves have shown a good performance in many fields including substance identification [4][5][6][7][8].Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS), a new evolved technique based on terahertz waves, can meanwhile measure the amplitude and phase information in the frequency domain. The technique directly detect time-varying electric field intensity in time domain of pulsed terahertz waves, then the optical properties of the tested material in frequency domain can be obtained by Fourier transformation.…”

“…For example, Molloy and Naftaly 14 utilized terahertz spectroscopy performed between 0.2 and 3 THz to test various woven and knitted fabrics containing yarns of different animal origins. The received signal that lay within the terahertz spectrum carried information on the wool's animal origin, giving a possibility to distinguish wool type.…”
