Work extraction, information-content and the Landauer bound in the continuous Maxwell Demon

Abstract: In a recent paper we have introduced a continuous version of the Maxwell demon (CMD) that is capable of extracting large amounts of work per cycle by repeated measurements of the state of the system [1]. Here we underline its main features such as the role played by the Landauer limit in the average extracted work, the continuous character of the measurement process and the differences between our continuous Maxwell demon and an autonomous Maxwell demon. We demonstrate the reversal of Landauer's inequality depe… Show more

“…3b,5b). Indeed, CTF profits on early and rare unfolding events during the pulling protocol, making Υ and η I larger, a feature also observed in a recent experimental realization of the continuous equilibrium MD [20,49]. In contrast, both DTF and CTF are inefficient regarding η M : W d decreases by roughly k B T Υ leaving the second law inequality unweakened and the Jarzynski bias almost unchanged with feedback.…”

“…For the relevant case Υ > 0 the dissipated work is reduced with respect to the nonfeedback case, W d ≤ W d 0 . We define the informationto-energy or feedback cycle efficiency [47][48][49], η I , as the reduction in dissipation, ∆ W d = W d 0 − W d , relative to the second law bound, W d 0 + k B T Υ:…”

“…This could lead to further reductions in the amount of total dissipation required to unfold/refold a DNA hairpin, possibly even leading to work extraction. For instance, recent work by Ribezzi-Crivellari and Ritort [219,220] showed how one can use continuous feedback to implement a Maxwell demon in a DNA hairpin. Specifically, by observing whether the hairpin has spontaneously unfolded, and applying a subsequent control protocol contingent on the readout of such observations, one can rectify fluctuations from the thermal reservoir.…”

“…In the context of information theory and processing, unifying theories for nonequilibrium statistical mechanics have been presented in [71]; work extraction, informationcontent and the Landauer bound in the continuous Maxwell Demon have been analyzed in an experimental paper [72]. Concerning unstable and metastable systems, stochastic dynamics in highly unstable systems has been studied in [73].…”
