Work in progress - enhancing student-learning through state-of-the-art systems level design and implementation

Abstract: -The curriculum for undergraduate engineering programs is often partitioned into several courses that are taught in isolation followed by a single culminating senior design or capstone project experience. In the senior design class students begin to synthesize the knowledge and skills that they acquired through the engineering curriculum. This paper presents lower and upper division course and curricular changes made to accommodate learning objectives that better prepare students for project-based learning. Th… Show more

“…In literature the art and design are linked with the History of art, reflection and analysis of art and design, contemporary art, technology, and the internet, Art and business skills, Studio practice and teaching, Typographical skills teaching, Professional skills in art and design and ability of students to improve their skills in other fields through art and design (Lai and Hwang 2015;Lohinskyy et al 2021;Marshalsey 2021). Studying the art and design is vital as it helps students write reports and essays (Liddicoat et al 2008;Souleles et al 2015;Staff and Farmer 2019) for practical and creative projects (MacDonald 2017;Wang 2015;Zhang et al 2019), attending lectures and seminars (Lockheart 2018;Song and Huang 2017), hearing from industry speaker (Ariga and Watanabe 2008;Jegede et al 2018;Zhou, Yuan, and Cai 2021), placements and industry experience, project, and teamwork (Chumarina et al 2017;Feil and Zingoni 2019;Jackson 2013) Through analyses of literature, it has been concluded that there is extensive research on art and design, particularly in the context of the USA and China. However, the core focus was on art evaluations and artistic ways of thinking.…”

“…Besides, it is also shown how this approach motivated students to engage in the learning process. LIDDICOAT et al (2008) described modifications done in the curricular base of engineering courses to accommodate learning objectives which better prepare students for the PBL approach. The following competencies were included: Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools, Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design, project for manufacture, electronic assembly, project management, ethics applied to engineering and communication.…”

“…In the Introduction to Systems Design course, students design a custom computing platform using programmable logic with reusable intellectual property core Technology, instead of using a standard hardware development board in a traditional embedded systems course. 1,2 In addition, students interface this computer system to external hardware devices that include digital and analog I/O, and develop firmware to best meet the system design requirements. In the Microelectronics and Electronic Packaging course, students gain a handson experience in designing and manufacturing a complex system through layout, assembly and testing an electronic device involving a multilayer Printed Circuit Board (PCB).…”
