Work management as a means to adapt to constraints in farming systems: a case study from two regions in Morocco

Abstract: -Two investigations were carried out to characterize how farms manage work as a means to cope with several constraints. The investigations were based on the application of the "Work Assessment" method in 44 farms, located in two regions in Morocco. A first investigation protocol was applied in 30 farms in a rainfed agricultural area with possibilities of groundwater irrigation. The study showed that very small-scale farms specialize in cattle rearing. By contrast, farms with more land and capital tend to diver… Show more

“…The results show that most routine farm labor (more than 72% of the total time amount) on the oasis farms is provided by family members, confirming previous results in other regions in Morocco, Europe, and South America, where animals are reared by their owners (Sraïri et al, 2018;Cournut et al, 2018;Dieguez et al, 2010). This is even truer in times of crises, like that caused by COVID-19, when incomes are limited (Ragkos et al, 2018).…”

“…Le rôle de l'élevage laitier dans ce cas est de garantir des revenus plus réguliers que ceux issues des cultures et de l'élevage à viande, et permet aux petites exploitations d'approvisionner en cash la trésorerie quotidienne de la famille. Sraïri et al (2018) affirment que la disponibilité du foncier et du financement issus de l'élevage permettent de sécuriser l'association céréalicultures-élevage bovin au Maroc.…”

“…These approaches can clarify the different drivers of work organisation, whatever their source: on the production side (need to improve productivity, need to change to more environmentally friendly practices; new local food market opportunities) as well as changes to work patterns (an end to the contribution of older volunteers, new off-farm activities during the winter, the introduction of automated equipment, a lack of salaried employees because of the economic profile of the region, etc.). Sraïri et al (2018) and Bendahan et al (2018, in this issue) have analysed the implications for the organisation of work of diversifying crop-livestock systems.…”
