Work-to-family enrichment and gender inequalities in eight European countries

Abstract: All social roles have positive and rewarding as well as negative or problematic aspects. Research on the work-family interface has predominantly focused on conflicting roles. In contrast, this paper extends research on work-family enrichment (WFE), a positive aspect of work, and gender differences in WFE in a cross-national context. Drawing upon social role theory and the culture sensitive theory on work-family enrichment, we examined gender differences in experiences of developmental WFE in a sample of servic… Show more

“…Thirdly, we will provide more conclusive results on gender differences in part-time employment and satisfaction with work-life balance by not only examining differences between men and women, but by also analyzing how these differences are shaped by national-level gender inequality. Finally, our study contributes to the growing body of cross-national comparative research on the work-family interface which aims to put employees' work-life experiences into context, thereby ac-knowledging that the interface is shaped by its societal context (Beham et al, 2014(Beham et al, , 2018Ollier-Malaterre et al, 2013;Präg and Mills, 2014;Ruppanner and Huffman, 2014;Ruppanner and Maume, 2016).…”

“…Based on the principle of exchange, adopting family-friendly policies means that the company has a favorable attitude towards workers. Previous findings show that flexibility improves the influence of workers over work and family issues (Allen, Johnson, Kiburz, & Shockley, 2013), enhancing enrichment as a result (Wayne, Casper, Matthews, & Allen, 2013) (Chan, et al, 2016) (Beham, Drobnič, Präg, Baierl, & Lewis, 2020).…”

“…WLE arises when skills, flexibility, social (supervisor support), psychological (self-confidence) and material resources (financial) formed during course of actions performed in one domain improve and influence psychological state of another domain. For example, conflict resolution skills gained in training at work will also allow workers to resolve disputes more effectively within their families (Beham, Drobnič, Präg, Baierl, & Lewis, 2020). Thus, job supports family by enhancing personal goodness and family job may benefit by reducing stress or tiredness (Bhargava & Baral, 2009).…”

“…Ample literature suggests that gender norms have implications on the experiences of the work-life interference of men and women (Cinamon and Rich, 2002 ; McGinnity and Calvert, 2009 ; Hagqvist et al, 2012 ; Fahlén, 2014 ). Some evidence points to a similar situation for enrichment, but here knowledge is still scarce and more research is needed (Härenstam, 2009 ; Williams et al, 2016 ; Beham et al, 2020 ). One of the few studies on enrichment comes from Lapierre et al ( 2018 ), who presented marginal support for a moderating effect of gender in the relationship between enrichment and its antecedents.…”
