Over the past 15 years, the work of staff at the University of Arizona (UA) Libraries has transformed significantly to meet the evolving needs of library users, the changing profession, and the economic climate. To keep pace with these changes, the UA Libraries have gradually shifted to a new, competency-based hiring and performance management model. This article will describe the process of moving to a competency-based model both for librarians and classified staff at the University of Arizona.Over the past 15years, the work of both librarians and classified staff at the University of Arizona (UA) Libraries has changed significantly. Initially, the change began with classified staff that, after the Libraries' 1993 restructuring to a team-based environment, took on significant responsibility for work in the new library teams. This included the ongoing improvement and redesign of work processes, the supervision and training of other staff and student employees, the monitoring of budgets and work process statistics, and development of system requirements for the selection of vendors and products.
