Working Hours and Cardiovascular Disease in Korean Workers: A Case‐control Study

Abstract: ORs in the long-term were 2.90 (95% CI: 1.86−4.52) for working ≤40 hours, 1.73 (95% CI: 1.03−2.90) for working 48.1−52 hours and 3.46 (95% CI: 2.38−5.03) for working >52 hours compared with the 40.1−48-hour working group. Conclusions: Long working hours are related to an increased risk of CVDs, and the degree of risk differs based on CVD subtype. Short working hours are also related to an increased risk for CVDs. More prospective studies targeting specific disease risks are required. (J Occup Health 2013; 55: … Show more

“…A major limitation of these studies is that working hours were elicited via self-report. Additionally, researchers measured working hours on a daily 3 , 6 , 7) or weekly basis 8 - 13) and monthly overtime 4 , 5 , 14) for various time frames, i.e., the previous week 12) , past month 5 , 8 , 13) , past 3 months 5 , 12) , and past year 13) , using a single question 3 - 11) , 14) . All these factors may influence the association between working hours and disease risk.…”

“…In a case-control study that targeted patients visiting emergency rooms in Korea, the odds ratio of CCVDs was 1.73 (95% CI=1.03-2.90) for those whose average number of weekly working hours was 48.1-52 hr, as compared to those whose number of weekly working hours was 40.1-48 hr during the past 3 months. The odds ratio of those whose average number of weekly working hours was over 52 hr was the highest, at 3.46 (95% CI=2.38-5.03) (22). …”
