Working life and stress symptoms among caregivers in elderly care with formal and no formal competence

Abstract: Managers need to have a strategic plan for how to create a working environment for caregivers with no formal competence. Caregivers' self-determination seems to be important for stress symptoms. Meaning, self-determination, impact and opportunities appear to be important for job satisfaction and competence, opportunities, resources and formal power for quality of care.

“…It is possible that structural conditions are stronger predictors of positive outcomes than of negative outcomes as stress symptoms. Similar results have been found previously (Engstrom et al, 2011). Whatever the cause, the FLMs' perceived stress symptoms need to be decreased, as stress has been found to negatively affect decision-making, increase the risk of errors and affect leadership behaviors among nurse managers (Shirey, Ebright, & McDaniel, 2013).…”

“…For example, a survey of 572 NH staff in Sweden found that direct caregivers who received no education about care, medicine, or social support reported higher workload, more communication obstacles, poorer sleep, and more stress symptoms compared with those who completed at least 10e20 weeks of education on care, medicine, and social support [17]. A survey of 804 staff in 21 Swiss NHs found that staff use of recommended measures in response to residents' aggressive behaviors was related to their training on aggression management, employment level, and professional experience [18].…”

“…As a side-effect feelings of being controlled were reported by the interviewed nurses. Because there is increasing evidence internationally that the feeling of being controlled causes distress in nurses [29] the tool should be verified in a larger population with a quantitative design by monitoring side effects and desirable effects. Deeper insights into nurse's perceptions while working with the tool can be got when combining the quantitative design with narrative interviews.…”

“…Some 39% (out of n = 44) of the nurses working with the tool reported feelings of being more controlled since the implementation of the ITbased tool. There is increasing evidence internationally that the feeling of being controlled causes distress in nurses [29] Distress has negative effects on QoWorkL.…”
