Workplace Use of an Adjustable Keyboard: Adjustment Preferences and Effect on Wrist Posture

Abstract: This study presents an evaluation of an adjustable keyboard based on subjective preference and wrist joint motion during typing. Thirty-five computer users used the adjustable split design keyboard for 7-14 days during their usual work and were instructed to adjust the keyboard to the opening angle they preferred. At the end of this period, three-dimensional motion analysis was performed to compare the distribution of wrist joint angles while subjects typed on a conventional keyboard and the adjustable keyboar… Show more

“…Studies aimed at determining the most favoured keyboard orientation support a preference for split keyboards with a downward slope that allow a less pronated and less ulnar-deviated posture of the hands than the traditional horizontal keyboard, even if the alternative design initially decreases performance (Tittiranonda et al, 1999a). In addition, a study involving a 3-week test showed that awkward non-neutral wrist movements were prevented to a substantial degree when such a downward-tilted keyboard tray was used and a more longitudinal usability study of the Apple Adjustable keyboard revealed that pain complaints diminished (Tittiranonda et al, 1999b).…”
