Background: Healthcare workplace violence (WPV) is under-reported, universal and it is not given enough attention in medical education and continuing professional development (CPD). Incidents originated from multiple factors related to the patient, doctor, and organization. Effective training and awareness are key corners to tackling the problem. Objectives: To study the frequency and risk factors of violence among doctors working in paediatric hospitals in Khartoum state. Methodology: Descriptive cross-sectional study in 4 paediatric hospitals in Khartoum state in 2021, involving 189 doctors. Data was collected using a semi-structured, self-administrated questionnaire. Results: It was found that 152 (80.4%) were females and 37 (19.6%) were males. Violence has been encountered by 65.6% during their entire career in paediatric medical service. 74.6% have been exposed to one or more types of violence during the past year. Out of them, 86.2% and 11.32% encountered emotional violence and physical violence respectively. 1 in 50 victims experienced sexual harassment. No association was elicited between exposure to any type of violence and gender, age, length of service, or marital status. There was a strong association between professional level and experiencing violence (p-value 0.000) and particularly emotional violence (p-value 0.000). The lesser professional experiences the more it is likely to face emotional violence. About half of emotional, physical, and sexual violence victims did not react after the event. Those who experienced physical violence have a higher frequency rate of reporting violence than participants who experienced other violent types and this reporting was mostly to the superior i.e., informally. Only 5% of the participants got training in violence prevention and management. Conclusion: Violence is common among doctors in paediatric hospitals. Attention should be paid to improving doctor-patient settings and investing in violence prevention and management education.

Purpose Violence against healthcare professionals has become an emergency in many countries. Literature in this area has mainly focused on nurses while there are less studies on physicians, whose alterations in mental health and burnout have been linked to higher rates of medical errors and poorer quality of care. We summarized peer-reviewed literature and examined the epidemiology, main causes, consequences, and areas of intervention associated with workplace violence perpetrated against physicians. Recent Findings We performed a review utilizing several databases, by including the most relevant studies in full journal articles investigating the problem. Workplace violence against doctors is a widespread phenomenon, present all over the world and related to a number of variables, including individual, socio-cultural, and contextual variables. During the COVID-19 pandemic, incidence of violence has increased. Data also show the possible consequences in physicians’ deterioration of quality of life, burnout, and traumatic stress which are linked to physical and mental health problems, which, in a domino effect, fall on patients’ quality of care. Summary Violence against doctors is an urgent global problem with consequences on an individual and societal level. This review highlights the need to undertake initiatives aimed at enhancing understanding, prevention, and management of workplace violence in healthcare settings.

Background: Workplace violence (WPV) against healthcare workers (HCWs) is a growing global issue. During the coronavirus diseases-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, violent attacks on HCWs have been documented worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the magnitude and pattern of WPV among HCWs in Sudan during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A web-based cross-sectional study of WPV was conducted among registered medical and health workers (pharmacists, physicians, dentists, nurses, laboratory technicians, and administrative and paramedical staff) during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sudan. Data were collected from August to December 2021 using a self-administered questionnaire distributed through social media platforms. Results: A total of 792 HCWs returned the online questionnaire. The mean age was 33.5 ± 8.6 years, where more than half were females (54.9%) and working during the day shift (58.8%). During the COVID-19 pandemic, three out of every four participants (78.3%) reported experiencing violence, with 65.8 % experiencing it more than three times. The common types of violence experienced were verbal (91.6%), physical (50.0%), and sexual abuse (11.0%). The emergency department reported the highest number of violent incidents (46.9%). Half of these violent events were not reported (50.3%), primarily due to a lack of a reporting system. The demographic factors that were significantly associated with exposure to violence were participants' occupation (p < 0.001), age (p = 0.001), marital status (p = 0.002), and years of working experience (p = 0.020). Conclusion: WPV was rampant among the HCWs in Sudan during the COVID-19 pandemic. The current findings are presented to draw the attention of policy leaders and stakeholders in Sudan to this alarming problem prompting the pressing need for policy and system interventions.
