In this blinded randomized and controlled study, the anthelmintic efficacy of a tablet formula of ivermectin-praziquantel was evaluated in horses experimentally infected with three species of Strongylus larvae. Eighteen previously dewormed horses were inoculated on study day 0 with third-stage larvae of Strongylus vulgaris, Strongylus equinus, and Strongylus edentatus. The horses were randomly allocated to three groups (n = 6): test-drug (tablet formula), positive-control (reference gel), and negative-control (placebo tablet). On day 56, the horses were treated once with the respective drugs. On day 95, the horses were sacrificed, and necropsy examinations were performed to assess the status of the parasite burden (L4 and immature L5) and pathological lesions on selected organs and tissues. By the criteria of worm counts, the test-drug and positive-control showed, respectively, 100% and 97.3% anthelmintic efficacies on S. vulgaris, 100% and 81.4% on S. equinus, and equally 100% on S. edentatus. However, the efficacies on S. equinus and S. edentatus should be taken only as face values considering their respective low worm counts in the placebo group. The S. vulgaris-induced arterial lesions were also reduced in the test-drug and positive-control groups with efficacies of 73.9% and 62.9%, respectively. No adverse reactions were observed with either of the drugs. Our data demonstrate that the Equimax tablet formula was as safe and efficacious as the gel formula anthelmintic on large strongyles in horses.

Endoparasites of horses from the Formiga city, located in center-west region of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil

With the aim of studying the endoparasite fauna of horses from the Formiga city, located in center-west region of the state of Minas Gerais, 25 animals that were naturally infected with helminths were evaluated. By means of parasitological necropsies, different endoparasites were found. The subfamily Cyathostominae presented the highest incidence, followed by Trichostrongylus axei, Oxyuris equi, Triodontophorus serratus, Strongyloides westeri, Strongylus edentatus, Habronema muscae, Parascaris equorum, Probstmayria vivipara, Strongylus vulgaris, Gasterophilus nasalis, Anoplocephala magna and Anoplocephala perfoliata. In the present study, if the species Probstmayria vivipara was not considered in the prevalence, the frequency of Cyathostominae was equivalent to 94.85%. The results obtained in this study allowed us to detect and identify different species of helminths in horses, and confirmed the high incidence of nematodes belonging to the subfamily Cyathostominae in the center-west region of Minas Gerais.

Twenty horses naturally infected with nematodes were included in a blind, controlled field study on efficacy and safety of an oral 2% ivermectin formulation at a dose of 0.2 mg.kg -1 . Horses were divided into treated and non-treated (control) groups with ten animals each based on preliminary counts of eggs per gram of feces (EPG). Stool samples were collected after treatment for identification of nematode species. Clinical evaluations and EPG counts were performed on days 0, +5, +14 and +19. Days -15, 0, +5, +14 and +19 were 1925Days -15, 0, +5, +14 and +19 were , 1340Days -15, 0, +5, +14 and +19 were , 0, 12.5, 0, 1470Days -15, 0, +5, +14 and +19 were , 790, 875, 1605Days -15, 0, +5, +14 and +19 were and 1240 respectively. The efficacy of treatment on Days +5, +14 and +19 was 100, 99.2 and 100% respectively, with a significant difference compared to the control group (p < 0.01). The product was considered to be safe with no findings of clinical significant changes during the study.Keywords: Anthelmintic, EPG, efficacy, dewormer, antiparasitic. ResumoVinte equinos naturalmente infectados com nematódeos foram utilizados em estudo cego, controlado, de eficácia e segurança clínica a campo de uma formulação oral de ivermectina a 2%, na dosagem de 0,2 mg.kg -1 . Foram distribuídos em grupos: tratado e sem tratamento, de dez animais cada, baseados na contagem prévia de ovos por grama de fezes (OPG). Amostras de fezes foram colhidas pós-tratamento para identificação da helmintofauna. Avaliações clínicas e OPG foram realizados nos dias 0, +5, +14 e +19. Identificou-se dezenove espécies de nematódeos: Coronocyclus ulambajari, Craterostomum acuticaudatum, Cyathostomum catinatum, Cyathostomum pateratum, Cylicocyclus brevicapsulatus, Cylicocyclus insigne, Cylicocyclus leptostomum, Cylicocyclus nassatus, Cylicocyclus ultrajectinus, Cylicocyclus spp., Cylicostephanus calicatus, Cylicostephanus longibursatus, Cylicostephanus poculatus, Habronema muscae, Habronema spp., Parascaris equorum, Poteriostomum imparidentatum, Oxyuris equi e Triodontophorus spp.. As contagens médias de OPG dos grupos tratado e controle nos dias -15, 0, +5, +14 e +19 foram respectivamente 1925, 1340, 0, 12,5, 0 e 1470, 790, 875, 1605 e 1240. A eficácia do produto nos dias +5, +14 e +19 foi respectivamente de 100, 99,2 e 100%, com diferença significativa em relação ao grupo controle (p < 0,01). O produto mostrou-se seguro, não sendo observadas alterações clínicas dignas de nota durante o experimento.Palavras-chave: Anti-helmíntico, OPG, eficácia, equino, vermífugo.
