“…(12) The main events that explain such low rates of thrombolysis for stroke patients are: lack of public awareness about stroke symptoms to activate emergency medical services; lack of training for prehospital transportation professionals; patients' referrals to hospitals that do not perform thrombolysis; inefficient screening at emergency services to identify stroke cases; and lack of protocols that integrate all health professionals to avoid delays in patient presentation. (12,13) In this investigation, most patients were male and white, similar to other studies. (14,15) There was no association between skin color and gender and rt-Pa treatment outcomes.…”

“…In 2010, there were 2.8 million deaths and 39.4 million disability cases reported due to acute ischemic stroke [3]. Without intervention, the number of global deaths is predicted to rise to 6.5 and 7.8 million in 2015 and 2030, respectively [4].The major cause of ischemic stroke is occlusion of cerebral arteries either by a cardiac embolus or by thrombus formation in the atherosclerotic vessel walls [5].…”

Second, the increased risk of early case fatality (17) and medical complications (21) that were reported after early CT/MRI brain imaging in two Danish studies, was most likely due to reverse causality; patients who deteriorated during the first hours after hospitalization were more 38 likely to receive an early CT/MRI brain imaging, and also had a greater risk of death or medical complications (21).…”
