Would integrated Western and traditional Chinese medicine have more benefits for stroke rehabilitation? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: BackgroundStroke is a major cause of death or long-term disability worldwide. Many patients with stroke receive integrative therapy consisting of Western medicine (WM) and routine rehabilitation in conjunction with Chinese medicine (CM), such as acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. However, there is no available evidence on the effectiveness of the combined use of WM and CM interventions in stroke rehabilitation.AimsThe purpose of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the results of all individual studies to a… Show more

“…In the treatment of CI sequela, when treating post-stroke epilepsy, a combination of oral Chinese herbal medicine and conventional WM outperformed WM monotherapy, reducing the duration of epileptic seizures and increasing the overall response rate 21 . Compared with standard WM treatment, TCM combined with WM treatment has a better effect on improving post-stroke depression (PSD) 22 . A meta-analysis of 1,367 patients with PSD from 18 RCTS showed that the combined treatment group exhibited improved scores on the Hamilton depression scale (HAMD), scores on the stroke scale (SSS), and enhanced Barthel index (BI) scores compared to the WM alone group.…”

“…Some meta-analyses showed that acupuncture may have beneficial effects on swallowing function and dependency, but no data were reported for mortality. 40 , 41 However, another meta-analysis revealed that swallowing therapy did not affect case fatality (OR: 1.00, 95% CI: 0.66–1.52), but could reduce the incidence of pneumonia (OR: 0.36, 95% CI: 0.16–0.78). 2 Swallowing rehabilitation may decrease the risk of adverse outcomes, but the association was significant, such that we consider it may be overstating the effect.…”

“…TCM is a vast treasure trove, and there are many potential drugs that can be developed from it. Therefore, in the future, efforts should be directed towards excavating and developing the TCM treasure trove ( Duan T. et al, 2022 ; Feng et al, 2022 ; Zhong L. L. et al, 2022 ; Hao et al, 2023 ). Additionally, it is essential to focus on the development of TCM placebo and randomized controlled trials to improve the credibility of TCM for stroke treatment.…”
