Wound Healing and Angiogenic Properties of Supernatants from Lactobacillus Cultures

Abstract: Extracts or supernatants from cultures of Lactobacilli are used for their medicinal effects, including wound healing and immune system stimulating activity. We have studied the in vivo and in vitro effects of supernatants from bacterial cultures of two strains of Lactobacillus (LS) on tissue repair and angiogenesis. Subcutaneous injection of LS into rodent ears led to proliferation of blood vessels that also exhibited strong immunostaining for Flk-1 receptor. Some inflammatory cells were scattered among the bl… Show more

“…Previous studies have shown that probiotics exert diverse mechanisms, including stabilization of mucosal mast cell degranulation [29], induction of sIgA production [29], reduction in the cell apoptosis to cell proliferation ratio in the stomach [11], increase transepithelial resistance [34] and promoting angiogenesis [11] to mediate gastric ulcer healing. Here, we show that VSL#3 promoted gastric ulcer healing by enhancing the expression of growth factors, mainly VEGF by several folds.…”

“…Recently, it has been demonstrated that Lact. acidophilus supernatants promote angiogenic and chemotactic activities, which stimulate the proliferation in vitro of macrophages, lymphocytes and embryonic cells (Halper et al. 2003; Li et al.…”

“…Recently, it has been demonstrated that Lact. acidophilus supernatants promote angiogenic and chemotactic activities, which stimulate the proliferation in vitro of macrophages, lymphocytes and embryonic cells (Halper et al 2003;Li et al 2005). In addition, soluble proteins synthesized by probiotic bacteria are able to regulate intestinal epithelial homeostasis, suggesting that natural components from these microorganisms may be applied for preventing cytokinemediated gastrointestinal pathologies (Yan et al 2007).…”

“…The most important criterion is the facilitated contraction and reconstruction with less scar formation. Angiogenesis was also treated as an important criterion in wound healing, especially in the later stages of tissue repair as a process essential to restoring tissue damaged by injury and inflammation (Halper et al, 2003).…”
