Wound‐healing effect of acupuncture for treating phonotraumatic vocal pathologies: A cytokine study

Abstract: Objective Acupuncture is a less invasive procedure when compared with surgical treatment for benign vocal pathologies caused by vocal overuse. This study aimed to determine the wound healing effect of acupuncture in treating phonotraumatic vocal fold lesions. Study Design and Methods The study used a two-way mixed-model between- and within-subjects, prospective randomized, placebo-controlled, blinded, group design. Seventeen dysphonic individuals with vocal nodules were recruited from a university clinic in … Show more

“…In a separate study that investigated the anti-inflammatory effect of acupuncture, a wound-healing hypothesis of acupuncture was proposed. The study found that anti-inflammatory cytokine increased following genuine but not sham acupuncture 38 . It was concluded that acupuncture enhances the anti-inflammatory effect in vocal fold lesion healing.…”

“…Locally, each plays a role in wound healing. During wound repair, acupuncture can increase serum immunoglobulin, increase the leukocyte phagocytic index and lymphocyte transformation rate, and enhance the body's anti-infective ability, which can alleviate local prolonged inflammatory response (30,31). Acupuncture can adjust the inflammatory response and immune regulation of the body to the injury in various ways and enhance the tissue repair process.…”

“…Proinflammatory cytokines IL-1 beta, IL-2, IL-8, and IL-18; C-reactive protein (CRP) [37,38]; and TNF alpha, the anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-4 and IL-10 [37], and the dual pro/anti-inflammatory IL-6 [39] will be measured to determine if there is a significant change from baseline to post study (5 week). Venous blood (4.5 mL) will be collected in a blue-top collection tube containing 3.2% sodium citrate.…”
