Updated emission inventories of power plants in simulating air quality during haze periods over East China

Abstract. Air pollutant emissions play a determinant role in deteriorating air quality. However, an uncertainty in emission inventories is still the key problem for modeling air pollution. In this study, an updated emission inventory of coalfired power plants (UEIPP) based on online monitoring data in Jiangsu Province of East China for the year of 2012 was implemented in the widely used Multi-resolution Emission Inventory for China (MEIC). By employing the Weather Research and Forecasting model with Chemistry (WRF-Chem), two simulation experiments were executed to assess the atmospheric environment change by using the original MEIC emission inventory and the MEIC inventory with the UEIPP. A synthetic analysis shows that power plant emissions of PM 2.5 , PM 10 , SO 2 , and NO x were lower, and CO, black carbon (BC), organic carbon (OC) and NMVOCs (non-methane volatile organic compounds) were higher in UEIPP relative to those in MEIC, reflecting a large discrepancy in the power plant emissions over East China. In accordance with the changes in UEIPP, the modeled concentrations were reduced for SO 2 and NO 2 , and increased for most areas of primary OC, BC, and CO. Interestingly, when the UEIPP was used, the atmospheric oxidizing capacity significantly reinforced. This was reflected by increased oxidizing agents, e.g., O 3 and OH, thus directly strengthening the chemical production from SO 2 and NO x to sulfate and nitrate, respectively, which offset the reduction of primary PM 2.5 emissions especially on haze days. This study indicates the importance of updating air pollutant emission inventories in simulating the complex atmospheric environment changes with implications on air quality and environmental changes.

Abstract. Anthropogenic heat (AH) emissions from human activities can change the urban circulation and thereby affect the air pollution in and around cities. Based on statistic data, the spatial distribution of AH flux in South China is estimated. With the aid of the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF/Chem), in which the AH parameterization is developed to incorporate the gridded AH emissions with temporal variation, simulations for January and July in 2014 are performed over South China. By analyzing the differences between the simulations with and without adding AH, the impact of AH on regional meteorology and air quality is quantified. The results show that the regional annual mean AH fluxes over South China are only 0.87 W m −2 , but the values for the urban areas of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region can be close to 60 W m −2 . These AH emissions can significantly change the urban heat island and urban-breeze circulations in big cities. In the PRD city cluster, 2 m air temperature rises by 1.1 • in January and over 0.5 • in July, the planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) increases by 120 m in January and 90 m in July, 10 m wind speed is intensified to over 0.35 m s −1 in January and 0.3 m s −1 in July, and accumulative precipitation is enhanced by 20-40 % in July. These changes in meteorological conditions can significantly impact the spatial and vertical distributions of air pollutants. Due to the increases in PBLH, surface wind speed and upward vertical movement, the concentrations of primary air pollutants decrease near the surface and increase in the upper levels. But the vertical changes in O 3 concentrations show the different patterns in different seasons. The surface O 3 concentrations in big cities increase with maximum values of over 2.5 ppb in January, while O 3 is reduced at the lower layers and increases at the upper layers above some megacities in July. This phenomenon can be attributed to the fact that chemical effects can play a significant role in O 3 changes over South China in winter, while the vertical movement can be the dominant effect in some big cities in summer. Adding the gridded AH emissions can better describe the heterogeneous impacts of AH on regional meteorology and air quality, suggesting that more studies on AH should be carried out in climate and air quality assessments.

Modeling Impacts of Urbanization and Urban Heat Island Mitigation on Boundary Layer Meteorology and Air Quality in Beijing Under Different Weather Conditions

Beijing has experienced a rapid urbanization in the last few decades and has been suffering from serious air pollution during recent years. The Weather Research and Forecasting‐Chem model is used to quantify the effects of urbanization on regional climate and air quality and those of urban heat island (UHI) mitigation strategy on urban air quality in Beijing, with a special focus on the impacts under different weather conditions (heat waves in summer and polluted days in winter). The modification of rural land use into urban impervious surface significantly increases 2‐m temperature (T2) and planetary boundary layer height but decreases 2‐m relative humidity (RH2) and 10‐m wind speed (WS10) in urban Beijing, which further leads to the increases in surface‐layer O3 concentrations of 9.5 ppbv in summer and 1.8 ppbv in winter and the decreases in PM2.5 concentrations of 16.6 μg m−3 in summer and 26.2 μg m−3 in winter. Compared with normal days (clean days), the UHI intensity is enhanced by 11.1% during heat waves in summer (by 16.7% during polluted days in winter). Although increasing urban albedo is an effective mitigation strategy to decrease UHI intensity, it worsens the urban air quality. When the urban albedo increases from 0.2 to 0.85, the daily average PM2.5 concentrations are increased by 10.2 (6.1) μg m−3 in summer (in winter), and the daily maximum O3 concentrations are increased by 12.8 ppbv under heat waves in summer.
