Wrist-Ankle Acupuncture Has a Positive Effect on Chronic Pain: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: An increasing number of practitioners are using acupuncture methods such as wrist-ankle acupuncture (WAA) to treat pain. We aimed systematically to evaluate the effects of WAA on cancer pain, primary pain, chronic musculoskeletal pain and pathological neuralgia pain. Nine electronic databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on WAA from inception of the data base to July 31, 2022. RCTs within the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in the study. Outcomes included pain score, cli… Show more

“… 28 , 29 The response, often defined as a 50 % reduction in pain score, represents a common dichotomous outcome in pain research. 7 , 21 , 30 However, due to a ceiling effect, relying solely on response as an outcome has limitations in assessing between-group differences post-response. Our initial report failed to find an advantage of acupuncture at 45 and 60 min, as both groups exhibited high response rates early in the assessment.…”

“…According to evidence-based medicine, evidence derived from SR/MA is considered to be at the highest level ( Yang et al., 2022 ; Pan et al., 2023 ). However, not all medical evidence derived from SRs/MAs is convincing, as SRs/MAs may introduce various risks of bias in the production of evidence that undermine the reliability of their results ( Huang et al., 2021 ; Liu et al., 2022 ).…”

“…For item 2, five studies did not register a protocol, raising the likelihood of considerable bias. Pre-registration protocols help to make the research process transparent, which is essential for methodological quality evaluation ( Pan et al., 2023 ). For item 4, only three studies provided specific search strategies for each database, which may not be convincing enough for the adequacy of the search and reduce the reliability of the findings.…”

“…According to the philosophy of evidence-based medicine, evidence derived from SRs is considered to have the highest level of credibility. 31,32 Many SRs have been carried out recently to assess the efficacy and safety of TMS in treating…”
