Wrist Circumference: An Independent Predictor of Both Insulin Resistance and Chronic Kidney Disease in an Elderly Population

Abstract: Background and aim: It was recently reported that wrist circumference is associated with insulin resistance (IR) both in children and adults. We aimed to evaluate whether wrist circumference is a useful anthropometrical parameter for the evaluation of IR in an elderly population. Material and method: We performed a study on 40 subjects, 20 with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and 20 control subjects. IR was evaluated using the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). We measured the following anthro… Show more

“…Differently from waist circumference, wrist circumference measurement is not affected by clothing, respiration or by postprandial state which can interfere with the determination of waist circumference. 24,25 Measurement of wrist circumference may supplement in assessing generalised and abdominal obesity (and indirectly insulin resistance), when valid weighing machine is not easily available in the field for measuring BMI or accurate measurement of waist circumference is not possible in communities because of lack of privacy for removing cloths especially in women.…”

“…The easy and simple way of measuring wrist circumference is a considerable advantage in everyday clinical practice compared to the classical anthropometrical measurement such as BMI or waist circumference. Another advantage of using wrist circumference compared to the common anthropometric measures is that reflecting a skeletal frame size, it changes slightly through time [ 24 ].…”

“…Differently from waist circumference, wrist circumference measurement is not affected by clothing, respiration or by postprandial state which can interfere with the determination of waist circumference [ 24 ]. To date, there is no agreement on the optimal anatomical sites to measure waist circumference in children [ 25 ].…”

“…Hal ini ditunjukkan dengan hasil penelitian Mitrea dkk bahwa lingkar perut berkorelasi dengan IR yang dihitung dengan HOMA-IR (p=0.014). 26 Sementara itu, DM dan hipertensi merupakan coexisting. Faktor yang berkontribusi terhadap peningkatan koeksistensi DM dan hipertensi antara lain adalah obesitas.…”
