Abstract-Empirical research studies are the principal mechanism through which the software engineering research community studies and learns from software engineering practice. The focus on empirical studies has increased significantly in the past decade, more or less coinciding with the emergence of evidencebased software engineering, an idea that was proposed in 2004. As a consequence, the software engineering community is familiar with a range of empirical methods. However, while several overviews exist of popular empirical research methods, such as case studies and experiments, we lack a 'holistic' view of a more complete spectrum of research methods. Furthermore, while researchers will readily accept that all methods have inherent limitations, methods such as case study are still frequently critiqued for the lack of control that a researcher can exert in such a study, their use of qualitative data, and the limited generalizability that can be achieved. Controlled experiments are seen by many as yielding stronger evidence than case studies, but these can also be criticized due to the limited realism of the context in which they are conducted. We identify a holistic set of research methods and indicate their strengths and weaknesses in relation to various research elements.

Abstract-Recently, agile software development methods have attracted the attention of academic and industrial domains. Unlike traditional approaches, agile methods focus on rapid delivery of business value to customers through fast delivery of working code. Therefore, requirement prioritization is considered a crucial process in this context, since there is the need to identify which requirements must be developed first, based on stakeholders preferences and taking into account business and technical challenges such as dependencies of tasks, developers skills, limitation of budget, etc. In Scrum, the most popular agile method, requirement management is done by maintaining the product backlog, which contains the list of functionalities that must be developed. Although some works conducted systematic reviews on the topic of agile requirement engineering, to the best of our knowledge, there is no study that reviewed the specific subject of ordering the product backlog in agile projects. Therefore, in this work, we conducted a Systematic Literature Review of studies on this topic published up to (and including) 2016 through a database search, to identify and analyze factors and techniques used to accomplish the task of ordering the product backlog in agile projects. In total, we evaluated 1556 papers, of which 13 reported on the subject of study.

Authors of research papers often want to gain insight on how to improve the chances of their research being published. There have been several "how to" guides created for this purpose. Within its first five years, OOPSLA's popularity grew to the point that there was a panel focused on the topic of how to get a paper accepted [1]. Mary Shaw's tutorial/paper on how to write a good software engineering contribution was directed to an ICSE audience, but has many timeless suggestions that are still relevant in many general contexts [2].
