Recycling and reusing phosphorus in agriculture can reduce the consumption of natural phosphorus resources, which are continuing to shrink. Phosphorus fertilizers made from renewable raw materials (sewage sludge ash, animal bones, dried animal blood) and activated with phosphorus solubilizing microorganisms (Bacillus megaterium, Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans) offer an alternative to conventional fertilizers. These products should meet consumer and environmental safety standards. In this paper, based on field experiments conducted in northeast Poland, the effects of waste-derived biofertilizers on selected parameters of wheat yield quality are discussed. The study focuses on the technological properties of the grain (hectoliter weight, hardness index, Zeleny index, starch, wet gluten, and protein content), the content of proteogenic amino acids, macro- and micronutrients, and selected toxic elements in the grain. The quality parameters of wheat grain were not affected by the tested biofertilizers applied in P doses up to 35.2 kg ha−1, nor by conventional fertilizers.

Temporal variation of soil moisture is one of the influencing factors affecting crop water use efficiency (WUE). Compared with fluctuating soil moisture (FSM), stable soil moisture (SSM) with weaker temporal variance has the potential to improve the WUE of crops. However, response of crop rhizosphere microbiome to soil moisture temporal variation remains unclear. In this study, we performed pot experiments on romaine lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. longifolia) to compare the effects of different soil moisture temporal variation on plant growth, yield, water use efficiency (WUE), and rhizosphere bacterial and fungal community structures, via manual irrigation and negative pressure irrigation to create FSM and SSM conditions, respectively. The results indicate that SSM improved the growth and WUE of romaine lettuce. Moreover, the rhizosphere microbial community composition of romaine lettuce differed under SSM and FSM conditions. Under SSM, bacterial Bacillus, fungal Aspergillus and Chaetomium were enriched in the romaine lettuce rhizosphere, whereas some taxa such as bacterial Devosia, Lysobacter, Blastococus and Bacillus, fungal Alternaria were reduced; these taxa could therefore be biomarkers in future research. Partial least squares path model (PLS-PM) analysis revealed that rhizosphere microbial communities were indirectly affected by the soil moisture temporal variation, as evidenced by the improvement in plant growth. Our results suggest that the rhizosphere microbial communities of romaine lettuce primarily respond to changes in the soil moisture temporal variation through the plant-microbiome interaction but are not directly affected by soil moisture.

The research was carried out in three vegetative seasons 2015/16, 2016/17, and 2018/19, on an experimental plot in Padinska Skela, Belgrade, Serbia. The supplement included four NPK treatments (kg ha−1) and foliar treatment with effective microorganisms (EM 7 l ha−1) T1-129: 60: 60; T2-129: 60: 60 + 1 EM; T3-106: 60: 60 + 2 EM ; T4-83: 60: 60 + 3 EM. Four wheat genotypes were sown (Ratarica, Pobeda, Nogal, and Apache). Thousand grain weight and grain yield were determined. The thousand grain weight (TGW) was in the variety Pobeda 43.73 g, and the highest grain yield was in the variety Ratarica 7.02 tha−1. Both varieties are medium late, bread varieties. The treatments have different effects on the studied variables. The TGW was the highest in the T2 treatment of 40.81 g and the grain yield in T3 of 6.62 t ha−1, which was at the level of statistical significance of p > 0.01. The crude protein content was highest in the treatment of T2 13.93% (p > 0.01).
