X-Ray Examination and Sinoscopy in Maxillary Sinus Disease

Abstract: A comparison between the results obtained from X-ray examination and endoscopy (sinoscopy) of the maxillary sinus has not previously been published. In the present series 585 maxillary sinuses were examined by both methods. In 3 % of the cases we were unable to accomplish sinoscopy, and in 9% we may have overlooked the changes seen on the X-ray pictures. Sinoscopy was superior to the X-ray examination in the remaining cases, giving more exact information for differential diagnosis of the type and degree of the… Show more

“…Computerized tomography (CT) is the best tool in confirming changes in the paranasal sinuses (8), but implies transport of the patient to the C T scanner. Radiographic examination has a high specificity (0.86-0.97) but a much lower sensitivity (0.35-0.74) (8,9). Thus the incidence of affection of the paranasal sinuses found in this investigation is a minimum for the studied group.…”

“…Detection of postaugmentation maxillary sinusitis on conventional radiographs is difficult. Misinterpretation may easily occur, for example due to altered pneumatization and sinus depth as a result of the grafting procedure (Illum et al. 1972; Larenne et al.…”

“…The advantages of antroscopy over standard radiography and proof puncture have been well documented by both British and European groups (Ilium et al, 1972;Pfleidereref a/., 1986;Smith and Cable, 1988). Plain film abnormalities such as an 'opaque' antrum and 'polypoidal' mucosal thickening may represent allergic, infective or early neoplastic lesions and antroscopy will clarify this distinction with the option of biopsy available in cases of doubt.…”
