X Ray Observation of2kFand4kF

Abstract: X-ray-scattering measurements on TTF-TCNQ (tetrathiafulvalene-tetracyanoquinodimethane) above 54 K clearly reveal a new one-dimensional scattering at the wave vector (0.59±0.02)6* interpreted as 4fc F scattering and attributed to an additional phonon anomaly which also condenses at low temperature. This 4fc F scattering is still clearly visible at 220 K in contrast to the earlier reported 2fe F scattering which is found to disappear at 150 K in agreement with the neutron scattering results of Shirane et al %

“…Between T CDW and T MF , 1D CDW¯uctuations are present, as evidenced by planes of diffuse scattering in the X-ray diffraction ( Fig. 6) (Pouget, 2004). The latter are oriented perpendicular to the 1D chains at positions 0Y 0Y AE2k F off the main Bragg re¯ections.…”

“…Finally, while this paper was prepared, new experiments on the organic two-chain conductor T T F − T CNQ became available which clearly show dispersing signals both on the T T F and T CNQ chains with very unusual lineshapes 13 . Specifically, the T CNQ signals are somewhat similar to K 0.3 MoO 3 , and we know from independent experiments that there are strong 2k F -CDW fluctuations on this chain in the metallic state 14 . (The T T F -chain exhibits strong 4k F -CDW fluctuations at very high temperature and is expected to be a Luttinger liquid.…”

“…Also in the organic conductor T T F − T CNQ, anomalous lineshapes are observed 13 . Of interest here is the T CNQ-band which shows 2k F -CDW fluctuations in the metallic state 14 and triggers a series of transitions into a low-temperature CDW phase. While some materials such as the Bechgaard salts 7 , or the T T F -band of T T F − T CNQ (which has strong 4k F -CDW fluctuations 14 ) may well fall into the Luttinger liquid universality class, it is particularly surprising that CDW systems such as K 0.3 MoO 3 , or the T CNQ-band in T T F − T CNQ, should behave as Luttinger liquids.…”

“…Evidence for such behavior has been found, e.g. in TTF-TCNQ [10] for S(k), and (T MT SF ) 2 ClO 4 [11] for T −1…”
