Workplace spirituality and faith are important and emerging trends in business that should direct managers' attention for various reasons. Therefore, this qualitative study asks whether a religious work environment provides a beneficial or challenging factor for an organization. It examines the particular work environment of a faith-based hospital and its effects on employees' motivation and work ethics. The study adopts a qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews. The interviews were conducted with human resources (HR) staff and nurses of an Adventist Hospital in the USA. The interviewees were purposefully selected to learn about their individual perspectives. The findings indicate that religiously affiliated organizations attract a special type of employee with a certain work ethic. The respectful, friendly and helpful treatment of colleagues amongst each other is one of the biggest differences when compared to non-faith-based organizations. Additionally people are more altruistic, humble and dedicated. In addition, the community outreach and the chance to support patients, both medical and spiritual, gives the work a special meaning. However, the study also indicates some challenges due to the religious affiliation, especially in the case of tough business decisions. Thus understanding the special features of a religiously affiliated organization and its effects on employees might help secular organizations to provide a spiritual working environment for their employees to take advantage of the beneficial effects without having to deal with the identified weaknesses.

The BSC has been well accepted as a suitable tool for assessing and monitoring financial performance of organisations. Subsequently it has been embraced by organisations as financial and nonfinancial performance indicators that help organizations align their initiatives with the organization's strategy. However, the question of how the BSC can be enhanced to incorporate non-financial performance is still being raised. One of the important non-financial prospectives is the Spirituality. The goal of this paper is to review the recent research on Spirituality as nonfinancial performance indicator for the BSC. In this paper an overview of the BSC and its perspectives is given, providing a justification for the importance of non financial performance measures to overall organizational performance. The novelty of this paper is that through an elaborate discussion, Spirituality is proposed as a potential additional dimension that can enhance the BSC. Subsequently, the enhanced BSC would incorporate spirituality as an important dimension that affects employees as well employers, who are the key drivers of financial performance. Overall, the proposed dimension would strengthens the tool's efficiency and effectiveness.

The purpose of this article is to share findings from an Australian qualitative study (n = 40) about the perspectives of managers and professionals around embedding workplace spirituality into the business curriculum. Academics are now publishing work that addresses workplace spirituality in the business curriculum, but few studies exist that focus on the perspectives of managers and professionals in the field. This article seeks to bridge that gap. Analysis revealed that managers as participants constructed rationales focusing on why workplace spirituality should or should not be addressed in the business curriculum and issues about how it might occur. Some of the perceived complexities of embedding workplace spirituality into public university programs were also identified. The findings of the paper would be particularly relevant to business schools considering the inclusion of workplace spirituality into their curriculum and structuring discussions to incorporate stakeholder perspectives from the business community. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
